Annabel’s screaming and sobbing, half the girls in the room are sobbing, and I’m just standing, staring at Ruth, lying there on the floor in a pool of blood, eyes blank, just like Yoko—she had a funny smile on her face but now it’s gone slack and empty, so empty. I can’t believe she did it, can’t believe they did it, just can’t believe...it.

Not Ruth. Not Ruth. Anyone but Ruth.

How can someone so good die like that?

This is like, the ultimate proof there’s no God. No anything.

Ruth wouldn’t agree, but then she’s not here to see it.

The man wipes his knife on a clean bit of Ruth’s robe and sheathes it. Strides towards me. Before I know what he’s doing he’s grabbed a handful of my robe and hauled me to the front. Cold sweat breaks out all over me—my tears trail off abruptly, frozen by terror—is he going to kill me because I was shouting so loud?

“I will take this one instead!” He slaps me around the head. “And she will be as good a wife as she claims.” He slaps me again. “Or she will join my first wife in hell!” Yet another whack.

The leader smirks, as though all this is terribly amusing, but speaks the formal Arabic, and moments later I seem to be married.

“Say it,” orders my husband.

I recite quickly and clearly. In a respectful voice. With my eyes demurely cast down. I don’t know how I do it. I’m shaking with rage as well as with grief.

But I know now what I have to do. I have to survive. And someday, when my husband is asleep, and there’s a chance I’ll get away, I’ll take his knife or a brick or anything heavy or sharp enough, and I’ll go all Judith on him. Ruth used to tell me about Judith whenever I complained there were no strong women in the Bible. That’s what I’ll do. I’ll end his evil existence. I’ll kill him for Ruth, for what he did to her. For what he’s going to do to me. For Yoko and Daniyah.

And I’ll escape.

And I’ll live.

Someday. He thinks I’m nothing. He won’t watch his back. He’ll learn.

Ruth wouldn’t like it.

But she just lost her vote.
