Should Your Dream Team Include a Lawyer?

Most up-and-coming podcasters feel their bases are covered with a co-host, producer, guests, and some trusted people to give them feedback. But others feel they need one more person to get the ball rolling: a lawyer. After all, a lawyer knows a lot more about intellectual property—whether related to one’s ownership of a show title, or the components that go into making a show (like music, which we’ll talk more about in Part 5, “Make It”). Lawyers also come in handy if you ever want to bring a show to a network or take a show out of a network (which we’ll discuss more in Part 6, “Share It”). They’re also worth consulting if you’re covering territory that has the potential to get sticky, like a true-crime story. I, myself, have talked with a lawyer in the past, as have many of my podcasting friends, and we’re better for the experience.

If you’re inclined to hire a lawyer but aren’t sure where to begin, ask others in the podcasting sphere for referrals, and then talk to a few. Many lawyers offer free initial consultations, which give you the chance to figure out if they’re the right fit for you and your needs. And bonus: If a friend refers you, many lawyers will charge you a lower rate.
