You also want to be aware of survey risks. The most basic of these is pretty simple: What if the bad guys notice the PCs staking out their location?

This common risk is likely resolved with some kind of Stealth-type test. If the PCs are noticed, then the bad guys might shoo them away (preventing a more detailed survey), immediately attack them, and/or increase their security. (Their actual choice will depend on both the scenario and the specific circumstances.)

Other survey risks are, of course, also possible, and will often be tied to particular actions taken to reveal challenging survey elements. For example, the PCs might trigger a booby trap or simply fall and injure themselves while trying to climb up to some vantage point.
