Publicity and marketing are essential to any dance company or Broadway show. Stage productions must compete with television and movies, school activities, the internet, and video games, as well as other dance companies. With all that competition for an audience, publicity and marketing are key to filling the seats in the house.
Publicity and marketing do the following:
• Identify the target market for the company or show and decide how best to advertise to that audience
• Solicit, arrange, and organize media interviews (print, radio, television, and online)
• Design and place ads
• Arrange for publicity stunts to attract attention to the show or dance company
• Maintain the company’s website and social media
• Organize promotional events and conferences
• Coordinate handling of critics, including contacting them, securing complimentary tickets for them, and compiling press packets for them
• Oversee the archiving of all press clippings, video clips, photos, and online links
All these people in these positions are necessary to have a well-run production.
But, if you want to be performing that production how do you get onstage? Enter the agent.
