Chapter Six

Halloween weekend was here before I realized it. Even though I decided to go to the party to try and keep Cierra safe, I still didn’t feel any better about my decision. My stomach was in knots all day Saturday, and by that evening, it was so tense I couldn’t even enjoy all of the candy, popcorn, and pizza that was served during Hallelujah Night. My mind was all over the place, and I couldn’t even focus on the games and activities.

Finally, Cierra announced it was time for us to leave. She had forgiven Kacee and told her she could come with us too. We ducked into the women’s restroom and changed out of our costumes. Cierra decided it would be better if we changed at the church instead of at Burger King. She didn’t want Johntay seeing her in her genie costume and thinking she was immature. Once we were re-dressed, Cierra stuck her head out of the restroom and looked up and down the church hallway. All was quiet, and no one was in sight. “Okay, let’s go y’all. Quick!”

My heart was beating fast as we ran out of the church. I kept waiting for someone to yell out our names and ask where we were going, but we were in the clear. We spotted a red GMC Acadia parked in a dark section of the parking lot.

“That’s them!” Cierra said. We ran toward the vehicle and hopped inside. Johntay was sitting in the front seat, and Cierra squeezed in the middle, practically sitting in Johntay’s lap. His brother, David, was in the driver’s seat, so that left me, Kacee, and Londyn to get into the backseat with this other boy. David introduced him as his friend Michal who was in the eighth grade.

“He’s supposed to be in ninth but he flunked.” David laughed.

“Man, shut up,” Michal said, then I saw him turn to smile at Londyn. She quickly looked away and moved closer to me.

David cranked up the engine, and a DaBaby song blared through the speakers as we zoomed out of the church parking lot.

“Who’s truck is this?” Kacee asked.

“It’s my mom’s,” Johntay answered. “She works at night and she lets our oldest brother drop her off and pick her up so he can use the ride. But since he’s rolling with his girl tonight it’s all ours.”

As David drove, it felt like we were on a roller coaster. And it wasn’t because he was driving fast; my stomach was just rumbling so bad. Suddenly, I thought about something. If David was in the ninth grade, he wasn’t old enough drive! I didn’t know why I didn’t think about that before now.

“David, how old are you?” I asked.

“Fourteen.”

“What? Boy, you don’t have a license!” Kacee said.

“That’s it. Turn this truck around and take us back to the church,” I demanded.

“What? Nah, girl, you better chill,” Johntay said, turning around to glare at me.

“Say, I’m not ’bout to be late to this party fooling with y’all. Now shut up,” David said.
