THE SECRET CORRESPONDENTS

“You’re right. I don’t feel like myself,” I say, fighting to maintain composure. Haeri didn’t know of the mirrors. That much is certain. Bonwhe slowly releases the chair back into its upright position. I continue, “When I first saw my fingers disappearing into the mirror…” Here I trail off, gazing at my hand in a show of horror and disbelief.

Wait a minute, though. Why the dressing room mirror? None of the mirrors outside the Yibonn mansion were magical. I remember wiping steam off the bathroom mirror at Director Cha’s.

So many questions. If I weren’t on the verge of being exposed right now, I would absolutely press for details.

“I’ve been feeling awful lately,” I say, sighing wearily. “First there was the killer flu, and then these mirrors—” I pause to shoot him a tragic look. “And finally, being held at gunpoint today.”

Bonwhe glances away. “I’m sorry,” he says, clearing his throat. “I was scared, I guess. I’d never run into anyone out here.”

I let a moment tick by before accepting his apology. “It’s all good,” I say, silently cheering myself.

He’s quiet. Did it do the trick? I steal a quick glance at Bonwhe’s face as he gazes into the fire. There’s a concerned crease between his brows.

“I’ll look into what happened in the dressing room,” he says. “But please—”

“Not a word,” I finish for him. “And I’ll stay off the mirror.”

“Thanks,” he says, his face opening up again with a soft smile.

Crisis averted.

In full possession of myself now, I say, “I should get going,” and look toward the mirror. Bonwhe offers his hand in exaggerated gallantry.

“How have you been feeling since the flu?” he says. That tender attentiveness is back in his eyes.

“Good. Thanks,” I say, and taking his hand, let him pull me to my feet. His fingers don’t feel like icicles anymore, either. Have we synced to each other’s temperature? Feeling my pulse accelerate, I let go of his hand before he can let go of mine.

“You scared the hell out of me, locking yourself in the bathroom like that,” he accuses out of the blue. “I thought you were doing something terrible in there. Your last letter read a lot like a farewell, and I was pretty worried.”

A letter? Your last letter? Since when were Bonwhe and Haeri on writing terms?

He continues, “Don’t ever write like that again. There’s no reason for you to thank me anyway, and it’s just scary,” but I barely hear it because of the word letter still buzzing in my head.

A farewell letter between these two? Bonwhe knows something about Haeri that I don’t, that even Director Cha doesn’t. My heart begins a slow pounding.

“I promise,” I say, “that I won’t thank you again.”

I give him a half smile and then hurry off toward the mirror. Nothing good will come of my remaining here with him. I’ll just give myself away. Plus, I need time to process all this information. But Bonwhe catches up to me in a few long strides.

“Let me take you back,” he says.
