Now Luca remembered why he hadn’t come up to the main lodge before. There were too many people. Too many people who could be hurt if someone tried to take him out here like they had at that B and B in Toronto and that hotel in Wisconsin.

Unless those had just been strange coincidences. But he doubted that, just as he doubted those gunshots had been for a mountain lion or a coyote. They’d been meant for him.

And if someone tried again to take him out on the ranch, there were more people who could be hurt. More people than just Aubrey—although her being in harm’s way would affect him the most.

In the enormous great room, there were a few families with kids, some couples, and they were all staring at him and Aubrey now. Maybe they were just curious about him because he hadn’t come up to the main lodge before, and he was a stranger to them. A stranger who’d showed up during a storm when the roads were supposedly impassable...

Despite the grounds crew working on the roads on the ranch, they had still been snow-covered and slippery. But just as she was good at everything else, Aubrey was a skilled driver.

There were some things that she was better than good at, things at which she excelled, like making love. He’d never had a more responsive, more generous partner than Aubrey Colton. And he suspected that he never would.

Leaving this place, leaving her, was going to be the hardest thing he’d ever had to do. Maybe harder even than leaving his country and his family.

Luca suspected that if he didn’t get off the ranch soon, he would have no future on his own, either. Because it didn’t feel like everyone was watching them with just mild curiosity.

Someone was staring at him intently, almost malevolently—Aubrey’s twin. Jasper asked, “Where the hell have you been?” He might have been addressing Aubrey, but he was staring at Luca.

“What?” Luca asked in confusion. “You were expecting me?”

“No,” Jasper said. “I wasn’t.” He turned toward his sister. “I was trying to call you back last night in the barn, but you didn’t pick up.”

“I was fine,” she said.

Jasper stared intently at her for a long moment before glancing back at Luca. “Dominic called me to check on you.”

Was he still talking to her? Or to Luca?

Aubrey must have been confused as well, because she asked, “Check on me?”

Jasper narrowed his eyes and gave her a pointed stare, as if he was silently communicating with her.

Aubrey must not have picked up on his silent message because she shrugged off his concern. “He had no reason to check up on me. I’m fine.”

Apparently the FBI agent had found just enough to raise his suspicions and apparently Jasper’s even more. Was Jasper the one
