CHAPTER SEVEN
It was shockingly simple planning Christmas for Sienna; Connor was pleased to discover. He took his new role as Captain Christmas very seriously. Once Karl was out of the lodge, Connor met with the chef. âItâs going to just be the two of us. I know you guys are going home, so I just need to know where to find a few things in the kitchen,â he explained while his gaze trailed around the industrial kitchen. The chef, a petite woman in her fifties, didnât seem convinced her kitchen was in good hands.
Connor would not have been ready for the stare-down with the chef if it wasnât for his chat with his brother. Last night when Connor couldnât sleep, heâd made the asinine decision to call Colby.
âWhatâs up?â Colby answered, sounding wide awake for one in the morning. Connor could practically taste the energy drink that his brother was no doubt chugging. He grimaced at the thought.
Connor propped himself up in bed and laughed. âShouldnât you be sleeping?â
Colby scoffed. âSays the man who called me. Whatâs going on? Howâs training?â Connor could hear the tension in Colbyâs voice. This hadnât been the first late-night phone call Connor had made, but at least it wouldnât be depressing.
During the first year after his accident, Connor would drink and fall into deep bouts of depression. It was more than just a beer with dinner; heâd made drinking his new sport. Connor refused help, refused to even talk to anyone, and built up walls around himself. Colby was the only one that got through. When others had given up, Colby persisted.
After a particularly dark night, Colby had been the one who found Connor his therapist. It had also been Colby whoâd taken time away from classes to drive his brother to his appointments. Colby had teased, âYou think Iâm trusting you to get your ass to therapy?â
For his first therapy session, Connor had spent $150 sitting silently in a white room while a frail woman in a gray dress told him his feelings were normal and his thoughts were justified. Sheâd droned on about the importance of being true to himself, which felt a little too fluffy at first. Then as his sessions became more interactive, he opened up about the trauma of not only losing his career and livelihood, but also scarring his body beyond recognition. The loss of half his leg was the more obvious injury, but there was scar tissue up and down his frame.
And because Connor was an adult, heâd continued going to therapy, finally opening up when heâd seen his third bill and decided that $150 a week was too much to waste. Then heâd started talking. He talked about the error he made in the blink of an eye. How showing up late to a race had caused him to lose focus, caused him to take a turn too quickly when he wasnât ready. How one moment, one second, of lost control had sent him barreling through the air, his bike hot on his heels.
