Chapter Seventeen: Kitty

Panic invaded my body as I clawed at the thick forearm and hand muffling my scream. My legs kicked in a frenzy and all I could do was hope to make it to the open window where Luca waited down below. Unless he wasn’t there, or worse yet, he’d known someone was waiting for me. I could care less if you live or die, echoed through my blurry, frantic thoughts.

“Shh, Kitty, chill the fuck out, it’s me,” a harsh whisper ground into my ear.

When I pushed his hand away this time, he released me. “What the actual fuck, Diego?” I panted.

“Be quiet,” he hushed, glancing sidelong out the window and leaning back to stay out of sight. “I had a hunch they’d let you come get your stuff. Or at least, I hoped it would be you and not one of those goonies. Look, there’s a small window downstairs towards the back. I can get you out—”

“Diego, what the hell are you doing?” I asked as he pulled at my wrist, ducking when he crossed the window.

“I’m freeing you. Rafael’s got the car two blocks down.”

I yanked out of his hold again. His big brown eyes held only worry, and his black hair was a mess. Diego always looked younger than his brothers, acted younger too—he had a sweetness about him that drew you in like a warm hug. That was the only reason I hadn’t punched him in the face for what he just pulled. “Freeing me? I’m not being held captive. Is that what you guys think? Where’s Alvaro?”

“Earlier, Rafael and I saw that guy you came with. Al told us they took you. Kitty, they’re bad dudes, like really bad.” His pained voice was low and full of concern.

I cast a nervous look towards the window. “You shouldn’t be here, I promise I’m fine, I know what I’m doing.”

“Kitty, everything all right up there?” A voice sounded from downstairs.

Downstairs. “Everything’s fine, almost done!” I shouted a little too quickly. “Shit, Diego, get back in the bathroom,” I whispered and shoved his rock-hard arm. What did the Escarra boys eat to make them all muscle?

“I can’t leave you here,” he argued. “We’re getting you away from these guys. If I have to fight him, I will.”

“Alvaro is the guy I’m scared of right now, you twit. Did he tell you what he did? He locked me up like some kind of animal. Rockwell came to help me.”

“Rockwell?” His eyes grew wide while his golden skin turned two shades lighter. “Rockwell DiMarco?” He ran a hand through his hair. “Fuck, this is bad. This is so bad.”

“How do you know who he is? It doesn’t matter, it’s going to get much worse if you don’t fucking hide.” This time when I shoved his arm, he moved swiftly into the bathroom. Not a moment to late because the door swung, kicked open.

Luca sauntered in, black button up shirt and shades, looking like the crown prince of the underworld. He took a bite of a bright green apple.
