Chapter 40

Beep…beep…beep.

Sarah took another drink of wine; it was her fourth glass.

She blinked widely, trying to thin the gooey gelatinous coating on her eyeballs. It would beep again, she figured, any minute now. He was still trying to phone her even after her defiant comments in the parking lot. Sarah again thought of what Condi had said about hearsay and proofing the proof, but that is exactly what she’d been doing all along. Her mind was looping in ever tighter circles now.

She scanned the laptop screen once more, reading the information she’d gathered. Who would make up all this stuff? she thought, shaking her head and biting her thumb nail.

Beep…beep…beep.

He wasn’t stopping. It was his the fourth—no fifth—try, she recalled hazily, each time causing her to became increasingly infuriated. She couldn’t help but think of his attempts at using her, as he’d apparently used all those others, as toys, and play things, pawn pieces in his shameless games of power and control and lies.

“From another planet…another planet, Sarah! What were you thinking? It was just a prop…an expensive... converted… RV bus, love shack, or whatever. It wasn’t a spaceship. What were you thinking to even… even… God you’re an idiot Sarah Frances Whiting!” she mumbled. She then cursed under her breath as she thought about how gullible she must really be, believing even for a moment in such a crock.

Her anger swelled even more as she reread the article for the umpteenth time about that particular woman who got caught in this guy’s trap, ending up losing all her personal wealth, and her dignity. Because she trusted this…this conniving, Machiavellian, poser, she mumbled.

Beep…beep…beep.

It was him again, of course.

She couldn’t take it anymore.

She hesitated, drew back, took a deep breath through her nose.

Beep…beep…beep.

“That’s it!” she spits slightly as she said the words.

She reached down and snatched up the phone.

“Listen, don’t call me anymore, ever! Pendaghast! Or whoever you are. I don’t want to talk to you; I don’t want to see you; I don’t want to read about you ever again! All I want is to get through this, and go back to normal, back to my simple life! So leave me the hell alone!”

“Sarah, listen to me! What happened? Why are you acting like this? Read about me? What are you talking about? I…”

Sarah pushed the button hard, nearly breaking her fingernail doing so.

It felt good, releasing the tension. She took another swig from the glass, this time a sloppy one. The red fluid dripped down her chin. She wiped it with her hand, transferring the liquid mess to her jeans as she got up and went to the counter to refill her glass again. In doing so, she saw the picture of her dad and her on the counter top. It was the same picture that he now had on his desk at the home.

Sarah slowly sat down on one of the island stools. She picked up the framed picture and looked at it closely. Tears filled her eyes as she held it adoringly.
