CHAPTER 12

IN THE MORNING, THINGS were not better. They were worse. What made them worse was the Rambletown Bulletin.

Gabby’s article said:

Walloper has become a human playground. He’s full of swings that don’t go anywhere. His slump is so deep, a scuba diver could dive in and never reach the bottom.

I tried to digest the story over a bowl of Pirate Crunch. The cereal didn’t go down much easier than Gabby’s words. Those frosted marshmallow cannonballs looked more like baseballs than ever. Slippery little baseballs that kept sliding off my spoon as I tried to get ahold of them.

What did she have against me? I wondered. Racking my brain for an answer, I recalled the last conversation I’d had with her. We’d talked the morning my picture appeared in the paper, right before our game against the Haymakers. The morning my slump started. It was only a couple days earlier, but it seemed like a million years. Everything was so great back then. I was still hitting. The Rounders still had a chance to beat the Haymakers. Gabby had been so confident, she had crowed in the paper that’d I’d probably wallop a home run off Flicker Pringle.
