Follow me!” Ruby ordered. With her brothers and Dog tailing close behind, Ruby charged up the narrow aisle. They darted down a runway that led out of the bleachers, ran halfway around the promenade, and reentered the grandstands behind home plate.

“We’re going up there!” Ruby pointed into the crowd.

“But—”

“Not now!” Ruby cut Graham off. “We need to make sure we’ve lost them.”

Racing up the steps, they climbed all the way to the top of the bleachers until they reached a door.

“Are we going in there?” asked Graham.

After a quick glance at Griffith, Ruby pulled open the door. High above the field and directly behind home plate, she had found a storage closet. It was filled with lumber, the same type used to construct the bleachers. They shuffled in, and Ruby shut the door.

“Help me stack these up,” Griffith said to Graham.

Close to the ceiling of the closet were small, rectangular windows. So Griffith and Graham piled up some of the planks, and in moments they were watching the action.

On the field, the Travelin’ Nine were down to their last out in the fourth. At the plate stood Scribe (who looked enormous even from this far away), but he already had two strikes against him.
