When Julie came into Slocum’s room that night, he was expecting her. He hadn’t totally thrown caution to the winds, after all he had made a few enemies since arriving, so he did have his pistol cocked and aimed at the door as she opened it and slipped inside. When he saw that it was her, he lowered the hammer, then put the gun down. She never realized she had been a target.

“John?” she called quietly. “John, are you awake?”

“I’m here,” Slocum said. He turned up the lantern, filling the room with light.

Julie moved across the floor quickly, then set on the edge of the bed. “I heard about what happened in the saloon tonight,” she said.

“I figured you would have. When things like that happen, word gets around.”

“I worry about you.”

“Don’t.”

“No, I’m serious. I do worry about you,” Julie said.

“And I’m serious when I say don’t,” Slocum said. “A man who lives the way I do can’t afford to have someone worrying about him. Especially a woman.”

“Why, that’s the silliest thing I’ve ever heard.”

“No, it isn’t at all silly,” Slocum said. “You have to understand, Julie, I live my entire life in the moment. There are no memories, and there is no future. There is only now. That gives me an edge... the edge I need to stay alive. And if I ever started worrying about what my getting killed would mean for anyone else, I would lose that edge.”

“Oh,” Julie said, in a plaintive voice.

“You do understand, don’t you?”

“I ... I guess so,” she said. “But, what an awful way that is to live.”

“No,” Slocum said. “It’s not at all an awful way. You have to understand, Julie, that if your entire life is in the moment, then everything you experience, everything you feel, is larger than life. Like, what I feel for you, right now.”

“Oh?” Her tone brightened. “And what do you feel for me, right now?”

“You are making this moment complete for me.”

Julie turned the sheet down, then looked up with a quizzical smile on her face. “You’re naked,” she said. “Do you always sleep naked?”

“Not always.” He smiled. “But I figured you would be paying me a visit tonight.”

“Pretty sure of yourself, aren’t you?”

“Let’s just say I was very hopeful, and I wanted to be prepared.”

Julie let her hand trail down his stomach, across the wiry bush of hair, then to his cock, which was standing straight up. Slowly, tentatively, she wrapped her fingers around it. “Oh, you are prepared,” she said.

“That part was easy,” Slocum replied.

Standing up, Julie slipped out of her nightgown, then, also naked, sat back on the bed. “I’m the one who talked Aunt Emma into staying in town until we get Uncle Ian back,” she said. “I did that because I wanted to see you again. Is that wicked of me?”

“Wicked? No, I would just say that is clever. It did allow us this time together again.”

Slocum reached up to touch her, letting his fingers pass across silky smooth skin, tracing a path from her shoulder to the curve of a breast, then out to a hard, little nipple.
