OVER time, we’d gotten closer and closer, mentally. Our physicality to one another, though, was one of comfort, not romance. A touch here, a hug there, as and when needed. Our sexual preference was out in the open, which made the bodily comforts needed by us both accepted, not awkward. We had no problems giving the other a cuddle when happy or sad; it was a part of being us and being happy with the male form.

Good friends, whether straight or gay, embraced without fear of innuendo or misinterpreted intention.

I remember clearly the first time Matthew gave me a hug. We’d exited the Freer Gallery of Art when he suddenly turned around, engulfing me in an amazing hug I didn’t know he had the strength to give. He buried his head between my neck and shoulder, whispering heartfelt thank yous. I was so shocked that it took me a minute to reciprocate. Unwilling to pass up the opportunity to feel him close, I wrapped my arms gently around him, told him he was welcome, and gave him an extra squeeze before letting a choked Matthew go.

That one short cuddle started a trend. Whenever we left a venue, we’d briefly hug. It was our way to say thank you with no need for words. When parting for the day, we slowly but surely held on to each other a little longer. Everything was still based on friendship, and as much as I wanted to stay wrapped around him and sink into his touch, I had to let go, else my desire for him would have been noticed. Those occasions resulted in me taking a much longer shower when I got home.
