“Since we didn’t hear screams, I take it you kept your promise?”

Keller narrows a look on me that could shrivel a lesser man where he sits.

“I didn’t fuck her. We promised together or not at all. I won’t break that.”

Such a man of poetry.

“From the looks of your tented sweats, I’m gonna say you were tempted.”

“I’m human and she is the ultimate forbidden fruit. You’re two are lucky you’re my brothers and I can’t kill you both and take her for myself.”

I gruff out a hard laugh not entirely sure he’s kidding.

Keller is a brutal fucker in and out of bed. Putting a bullet inside someone’s skull for slights against his honor, a break of loyalty and anything else he deems as punishable has given us a nasty reputation of being coldhearted killers. I don’t dispute the accusations. It keeps most of the fuckers out there in check.

But not all of them are true. We don’t sell women into sex rings. We don’t push drugs and we sure as fuck don’t put people in graves who don’t deserve it. Keller deals with the bodies while Hensley and I deal with the money side of our kingdom. And then we come together at the end of the day and share details.

We know our strengths and Keller is the brutal fucker everyone calls him. We all have a dark side, but Keller is tainted from birth, given he is the firstborn. Our father never wanted an heir, much less three. He thought he would live forever. Heirs only got in the way. The day we were born, our old man realized his mortal life would end.

The old fucker died a few years back, and we ascended the throne.

Defending our inherited kingdom isn’t Keller’s passion, but he’s good at it. The downside is the dark edge he’s afraid of spreading to others. Briar mostly.

“You can’t spend the rest of your life holding back. I saw you between her legs by the fireplace. You almost took her. And bare on top of that. We never take women without protection.” Something happened tonight and I want to know what almost had my brother breaking his own rule. More than that, I want Keller to admit to himself that Briar is different.

We’ve shared women in the past. When we took over the Kingston kingdom, we agreed on one thing. We rule together in every sense of the word. That meant taking a bride and fathering heirs with one woman when we agreed we found the one. Until then, use protection.

“Fuck off, Loren. I don’t need you psychoanalyzing my every fucking move.”

“She’s different and you know it. She’s not like the other women who want you to fuck them hard and dirty. Briar makes you a better man and you haven’t even put a ring on her finger yet. Screw the blood oath.”

I can’t help the cocky smile on my face. One day my older brother will admit he is not like our father and can love another human being.
