Trapped in the Attic

Friday morning I hurried down the stairs, hoping to catch a glimpse of Gwendolyn before I left for school. Aunt Caroline sat at the kitchen table looking stressed. “Morning,” I said casually. “How’s Gwendolyn feeling?”

“Not well at all. I’m trying to get her in to see the doctor.”

Gulp.

“Is that why you aren’t at work?” I asked.

My aunt tip-tapped her fingers against her jaw and nodded.

“What’s wrong with her?” I was starting to worry that the incantation might have worked just a little too well.

“We aren’t sure yet. Hopefully it’s just the flu. She still feels very sick and weak.” I flinched again at the sound of the word.

My dad always told me that things like witchcraft were phony. There was no such thing as magic, and spells and incantations were make-believe. He obviously had never seen anything like what Kat was able to conjure up. “I’m late for school. Hope she feels better,” I said, hurrying toward the door. I jumped on my bike and pedaled as fast as I could toward Malibu Middle School.

Every neighbor’s driveway was like a marker I had to pass. School felt like it was miles and miles away. When the fenced-in buildings finally came into view, I felt like a runner who spotted the finish line. Hurrying into the classroom, I was relieved to find Kat there ahead of me. I dove into my seat. “Gwendolyn’s really weak and sick. My aunt stayed home from work to take her to the doctor.” I stared at Kat, trying not to squirm while I waited for her reaction.

Kat looked at me like I’d just spoken in Chinese. “So? This is what we wanted, right?”

“I wanted her to leave us alone. I didn’t want to kill her,” I whispered.

“Calm down, she’s not dead.” Kat rolled her eyes. “Wait and see what the doctor says before you panic.” She dug a mirror out of her purse and smeared on a thick coat of lip gloss.

“Kat. I feel so guilty.” I dragged my hand through my hair. “I’m thinking about telling my aunt what we did.”

She glared at me and her expression turned ugly. “Don’t you dare.”

After school I stashed my bike in the garage and walked into the house. I checked in with my aunt, went up to my room, and locked myself in. Curling up on the alcove seat, I opened my diary and wrote in it backward:

Dear Diary,

Kat and I did an incantation yesterday to weaken Gwendolyn’s powers. Now she’s sick and I feel awful. Kat warned me not to confess but Aunt Caroline will be furious if she finds out we cast a spell on her daughter. Not to mention we possibly made her get sick and then I didn’t do anything to undo the spell. But Kat will never speak to me again if I tell. Either way I’m going to make someone really mad.

I wish I could talk to my mom. She’d understand and tell me the right thing to do.
