9 A Bloody Visit
* * *
Cautiously, using the tissue paper as a shield, Frank picked the hairy claw up out of the deep wooden box and examined it. There were no tags or identifying labels attached to the grisly object.
âIâm calling Cody,â Joe said, reaching for the phone. Cody picked up after the first ring.
Joe quickly told Cody about the package.
âItâs an anteater claw,â Cody said, his voice sounding as if his jaw were clamped shut. Joe could tell he was furious. âProbably the one from the zoo packages that were stolen from me!â
âHereâs something,â Frank called to Joe. Carefully, he pulled back the hair from the underside of the claw. A tattoo marked the skin beneath the hair. âAsk Cody if this means anything,â Frank said. Then he read the tattoo. âX-3-7-C2.â
Joe repeated the tattooed numbers to Cody.
âJust a second,â Cody said through the phone receiver. âLet me check my order sheet.â
Joe could hear paper rustling, and then Cody returned to the phone. âYes,â Cody said. âThatâs one of the anteater claws I picked up Monday. But how come he sent it to you and not me?â
âDonât forget, the driver of the green car followed us from your dadâs,â Joe pointed out. âSo heâs probably been staking the place out. He must know weâre staying here and weâre friends of yours.â
âMike Brando knows who my father is,â Cody offered. âHe could definitely be behind all this.â
âIs he wondering why we got the package?â Frank asked. Joe nodded.
âSomebodyâs obviously been staking out your place, too,â Frank called out, loud enough for Cody to hear. âHe or she could have seen us coming and going. If the driver of the green car sent the package, it could be a warning after his run-in with Joe this afternoon.â
âMan, weâve got to get this guy,â Cody said in Joeâs ear.
âHow are the beetles?â Joe asked. âDid the fumigator come yet?â
âThe beetles are making their way from Bug Central to Bug Heaven,â Cody said. âDid you get things set up with Jennifer okay?â
âYes, we did,â Joe answered. âHow well do you know her?â
âNot at all,â Cody said. âWe just met the other day.â
âDid you hear about her expansion plans?â Joe asked. âHow she wants to change this neighborhood from retail to entertainment.â
âNo,â Cody said. âWhat do you mean?â
Joe repeated what Jennifer had said. âShe really wants to change the atmosphere of the neighborhood.â
âI havenât heard a thing about it.â Codyâs voice got a little louder. âAnd speaking as a retailer, Iâm not sure I like it.â
Then Cody switched subjects. âIs Dad there?â he asked.
âNot yet,â Joe answered. âHe left us a note saying heâd be back later.â
âWell, Dave called,â Cody said. âWe were supposed to meet him for dinner tonight, remember? I told him about the bugs. Iâm going to meet him at Dadâs in about an hour. Iâll just pick up something for us to eat. I donât feel much like going out.â
âOkay, great,â Joe said. âSee you soon.â
After Joe hung up, he and Frank wrapped the anteater claw back in the yellow tissue paper.
