CHAPTER 13

Midnight

“Now?” I whisper back, scowling at Gavin. “You want to talk now? Everyone’s asleep.”

He cocks his head to the door.

“Are you nuts? I’m not going outside!” Even if it’s no longer thundersnowing, it has to be freezing.

“I’ll be quick—promise.”

I open my mouth to say no again but instead find myself stepping outside the car, following after him. Gavin has this irritatingly powerful effect on me. No one else could get me to leave a safe car to brave the frozen, scary woods at night.

“This way,” he says, holding my arm and leading me away from the SUV. He steers me toward a large tree on the other side of the road, a few yards away. It’s big enough to provide some shelter from the light snowfall that lands on our jacket hoods and shoulders.

We’re in luck. Most of the storm clouds are now gone, replaced by endless clear black sky and a ghostly moon that rises above and bathes us in its eerie light. Never before have I seen so many stars. They dot the sky like sparkling yards of diamonds. I find myself both hating the wilderness and admiring its splendor.

Gavin clears his throat. “What’s wrong with Stu? I can tell you’re worried about him.”

“You want to talk about Stu . . . with me? Since when?”

He sighs. “We need to learn how to work together. For Stu, if nothing else.”

“Not a good idea,” I say. Even if I wanted to do this, I don’t think I can. We’ll just wind up fighting about it.

“Come on, Sam.” His eyes are warm. “Friends trust each other.”

“You think we’re friends?”

“Aren’t we?”

I take a step back, snow crunching underneath my boots. “Let me see,” I say, raising a gloved hand, ticking his offenses off one by one. “You never returned any of my calls after you left for Boston. You never e-mailed me back—not once. A whole year gone by, and not even one measly text!” My voice gets angrier as I get more heated. I didn’t realize until this very moment how much his ghosting hurt me, and damn, it hurt a lot more than I cared to admit. “Not much of a friendship, is it?”

“That’s not fair.” He kicks at the snow. The toe of his boot gets stuck deep inside the ground, buried under a drift of white powder. “I was busy with school—and football.”

“Not too busy for Britney though, huh?”

“That’s different.”

“Yeah, I bet it is.”

A painful ache tugs at my heart. He doesn’t need to say it any clearer. What he means is he was too busy for me. For a girl he cared about—for Britney—he somehow found the time to stay in touch.

“Forget it,” I say, feeling like an idiot. I turn to walk away. I’ve already said too much. “I’m cold. I’ll see you inside.”

“Wait.” He grabs at my elbow. “Please.”

I rip away from him. “I’m done waiting!”

Above us, the tree branches shake and shudder in the wind. He sighs and runs a hand through his inky black hair.
