Chapter Thirteen

Naomi

Naomi sat down at a small wrought-iron table on the patio of the coffee shop with two iced lattes. One for herself, and one that she had ordered for Lily. Except that she was thirty minutes early.

She had been unable to focus on anything outside of Lily’s phone call, and the frantic seriousness with which Lily had requested to meet and talk. What could be so urgent, or so important, that they need to meet as soon as possible and face to face?

There had been no indications that anything had gone wrong on their last night together, and yet, Naomi couldn’t help the sense of dread creeping up from deep within her that something was, in fact, very wrong. Why else the phone call?

Naomi had spent the last few hours going over every part of their night before in her head. Wondering if she had done something wrong, made Lily somehow uncomfortable, or missed out on some signal that Lily that was unhappy with what they were doing. But none of that made any sense to her. She remembered very clearly the pleasure that had taken over Lily’s body, the sound of her moan as she slipped into a shattering orgasm, the way Lily had looked at her as they both lay on the bed together.

As far as Naomi remembered, nothing bad had happened. In fact, it was the opposite.

Everything about the night before had been perfect.

So why the phone call?

Naomi, an unusual mess of worry and stress, sat at the table, her drink untouched, as she picked at her fingernails and stared into the park across the street, her thoughts taking her mind far away from where she was in the real world.

The time passed quickly, and very suddenly, Lily was walking across the street.

She appeared in Naomi’s troubled daydreaming as a sort of angel, her curly hair bouncing against her shoulders as she moved, her long legs smooth beneath the frayed hems of her jean shorts. Were those the same shorts she had worn last night? The thought made Naomi tremble.

“You’re right on time,” Naomi said first, trying to keep her composure, trying to remain as the woman in control of their dynamic.

“I don’t live far,” Lily said as she sat down. “Is this for me?” She pointed to the second glass of iced coffee.

“I ordered for you,” Naomi nodded. “I wanted to treat you.”

“Thank you,” Lily smiled and took a sip. “How did you know what I like?”

“Just a good guess,” Naomi purred. “I have a way of understanding the women I keep company with.”

Lily’s gaze darted to the table between them, and Naomi couldn’t help but wonder if she said the wrong thing. If Lily was about to say something about their relationship that would end everything, even though they had barely just begun.

The silence between them dragged on until Naomi broke it, unable to sit in the uncertainty any longer. “What did you need to speak with me about?”

“I don’t quite know how to ask,” Lily stammered and chewed at the edge of her pinky finger.
