Chapter 10

Quincy stared at the closed door. She’d become used to being the one to leave in her life. She’d been the one to keep the distance between her and her family, not letting them ever get too close. That had started at thirteen and hadn’t changed in the decades since. She’d been the one to leave her exes, with the exception of Gina, who’d left her. But unwilling to accept that, Quincy had left the entire mainland of the United States and fled to the Virgin Islands. Take that Gina.

Now she stood alone and swamped with a confusing combination of guilt, hurt, and raging jealousy. It tangled up her mind and her body. She was unsure if she should wait in the room, go for a walk to sort out her thoughts, or go find Missy and see exactly who she was meeting.

The latter idea was extremely tempting. Rarely in her life had Quincy felt the flame of jealousy burn so hot. Even when Gina left her for another woman. A hotter, younger woman. Pain and anger were the dominating sensations that coursed through her. But here, in this case, there was no denying that the green-eyed monster inhabited her brain and her heart.

Her heart. What a stupid thought. Missy was a gorgeous acquaintance. One she desired in ways she’d barely ever experienced. This was lust full-throttle. It could very well be a product of her age. She’d heard a lot of things about a woman’s late thirties. Surely what she felt for the well-put-together twenty-something with the sweet smile and incredible figure could be part and parcel to all that.

She dropped down on the end of the bed. There would be no running after her bride. As soon as the image of herself hiding behind a potted plant, spying on Missy and her date entered her mind, shame filled her.

No, Quincy would wait right here and figure out exactly what she needed to say to set things back to where they had been before last night. Maybe even put things in a better place.

It took three long hours before she heard the key in the door. “Olivia, I gotta go. She’s back.”

“Okay. Remember, don’t be an asshole.”

“Thanks. Love you.” Quincy turned off the phone and sat up straight.

Missy stepped through the doorway. She looked exactly the same, except that her lipstick had been replaced by the stain of red wine and little whisps of hair that had been tamed earlier now flitted around her head.

She dropped the keycard on the counter of the kitchenette and marched to the center of the room. She stuck her hands on her hips and looked down at Quincy. “Okay. Let’s talk. On the beach.” She stuck her thumb behind her toward the door.

Quincy jumped up. “Okay.”

As she followed Missy through the bungalow, she slipped on her thong sandals. She barely made it through the door as it swung shut in Missy’s wake. But Quincy managed to keep up as the younger woman wove a path through the other round, squat bungalows to the wide-open beach.
