Chapter 25

Chris

The judge grants our request for the search warrant. We arrive at Diana’s apartment just before nightfall with two uniformed patrol officers. Cramer knocks loudly on the front door and announces us. We stand back and wait, and I hold my breath. For a split second, I wonder if she’s left town again, slipping away before we can question her.

The lock turns, and I tighten my fingers around the search warrant. The door slowly opens, and Diana appears in the doorway. I’m relieved that she’s home. To my surprise, she doesn’t seem alarmed that four cops are standing on her doorstep. In fact, it looks as if she’s been expecting us.

“I knew it was only a matter of time before you showed up,” she says, rolling her eyes. “Look, I feel bad about what happened to Nia, but I’ve already told you everything that I know.”

“Well, that’s not why we’re here.” I hold up the search warrant for her to see. “We have a warrant to search your residence and vehicle.”

Her face drops. “What? No! You can’t just look through my things!”

“Actually, a judge says that we can.” I hand her the warrant.

Diana unfolds the paper and carefully reads the warrant before turning her attention back to us. “Do I need to call a lawyer or something?”

“That won’t be necessary,” Cramer says. “But that is your choice. We are just going to look around and make sure there is nothing here connected to Nia Bryant’s death. The sooner we get this done, the sooner we’ll be out of your hair.”

Diana takes one last look at the warrant and then hands it back to me. She reluctantly steps aside and allows us to enter the apartment. We find ourselves standing in a small living room. The apartment is neat and quaint, the perfect size for a college student. The walls in the living room are a deep shade of blue offset by the neutral greys of her furniture. A live plant stands in the corner of the room. It gives the living area an earthy feel.

“So, how does this go?” She shifts nervously from one foot to the other.

“The warrant gives us permission to search your residence as well as your vehicle,” I explain. “You don’t have to do anything at this time. If we have any questions about what we find, we’ll let you know.”

I can tell the idea of us searching through her things makes her uneasy, but she doesn’t protest any further. She finally stands aside, and we spend the next twenty minutes searching every room of the apartment, looking for anything that could be linked to Nia’s murder. I take my time, scouring every cabinet, compartment, and space that could be used to hide evidence. Cramer works quietly beside me as we sift carefully through Diana’s belongings.

After checking the living area and second bedroom, we move to the master bedroom. It’s the largest room in the apartment and takes the most time. We search every drawer and every dresser.
