Chapter 16

Que lo sapes

Esme took her babysitters for granted. She believed they were nothing more than nannies and didn’t bother to heed them.

When the first snake rested on her left leg, she thought nothing of it.

When the second snake's tongue licked at her belly then curled up on it, she became annoyed.

Then, the third snake’s head bopped at her neck. She moved to sit up, but the snake held her down, resting its weight on her throat, locking her into a vice that seemed improbable for its slender form.

After the third snake, Esme stopped counting the smooth slithering of snake after snake. Now, they not only covered her body but consumed the heat from her.

Hours ticked away, and cold formed in her belly, slowly building to an icicle that would grow into a glacier.

Esme did not fear snakes. They were unloved creatures, like her, but she did fear time. How long would she be locked up in the dark box? How long before she would be strong enough to fight? How long before she became nothing but a block of ice?

A snake sniffed at and licked her nose, checking, Esme assumed, for signs of life.

“Su dueña sufrirá por esto,” she told the snake and thought she heard a soft laugh in return.

She was dead serious; she would make Matea suffer for this.

A blister of anger formed on her soul. She acknowledged the anger by calling it up, putting gasoline on that fire.

Inside of her was an angry inferno she hoped would melt the cold building in her. Her anger had always fed her power. The strength of her fury had always made a difference. The anger and hatred she’d felt not only for her brother but for her parents had sparked her work the night she left home for good.

Esme realized she had missed something when it came to Matea, Something that would give her an edge. She had not hated Matea.

Until now.

She was jealous of Matea, she disliked Matea, but she did not hate her.

Now el odio was planted in her, and it burned.

Blinded by darkness and covered in Matea’s minions, Esme thought of nothing but hate and anger.

Her anger floated inside of her, twirling her guts, pushing at her lungs, and stinging her heart with flame.

She bit her lip and savored the anger, enjoyed the feeling of wrath digging into her thoughts.

The snakes shifted, and Esme saw a sliver of soft light to one side.

Esme laughed, like the laugh the snake had given her many hours ago.
