Chapter 10

I settled in to life [Text has been redacted here.] remarkably easily. I was adjusting to my new office, trying to figure out my new role. My co-worker, Madeline, was the other SOO in the office. Madeline was much younger than me and the complete opposite in personality. I quickly realized that this office did not have the workload for a second SOO, but I was just happy to be there. My main job was handling specific [Text has been redacted here.] officers who were overseas, but did limited jobs for the Agency. I faced the usual obstacles in this new position and I had to prove myself all over again. Luckily, the CI officer in the office, Alvin, seemed to recognize that I might have half a brain and gave me what he considered the two biggest cases to handle. Madeline did not make much of an effort to train me on anything, and when she did I found that some steps were conveniently left out, but I was good at figuring things out myself. Most of my office mates were in their twenties, so I was one of the older officers. I did not feel much warmth from the women in the office, but I ignored it and focused on my job.

The second day in the office brought Barry flashing on my screen. He wrote that he just met my [Text has been redacted here.] boyfriend. I wrote back jokingly asking which one. Barry went on to describe Jarod. My heart jumped.

He mockingly said, “He wants to go to [Text has been redacted here.]. I wonder why?”

I replied that it could not be because of me, because I was pretty sure he hated me. Inside I was hopeful that maybe this was Jarod’s way of getting closer to where I was. I half-jokingly asked if I was in trouble now.

“Not yet,” Barry replied flirtatiously. Barry went on to explain that they were trying to work something out for Jarod. I was dying for more information, but I left it at that. The next day I got a chat message from Barbara warning me that Jarod was in the building. She did not want me to be surprised if I ran in to him in the hall at Headquarters. She did not realize that my move had already happened, and she also seemed to be under the impression that he and I were on bad terms. I was not sure what to make of that.

One day after quite a few of my chat messages to Chester had gone ignored, I received an email from him. In the email he rambled out a confession explaining that he had been ignoring me on purpose because he did not know how to deal with his emotions. He told me he had considered flying down [Text has been redacted here.] to see me, but then thought better of it, figuring I would not get anything out of his visit besides a nice dinner while he babbled on about his feelings.
