Chapter Eleven – Ezra

“How are you liking Bear Creek?” Waylan asked Camille after they’d all served themselves the delicious food Mary had prepared.

Lovingly prepared, his bear said.

Ezra chuckled. Mom does everything with love.

But her food was always the best. His mom had always taken pride in watching her boys grow up big and strong, and she put that strength down to a good day’s work or play, and plenty of good food.

“I fell in love with the town when I first came to view the house,” Camille admitted. “And now that I’ve officially moved in, I can see my love will only grow.” She paused, and color crept across her cheeks.

“Camille baked some wonderful pies for Henry, Levi, and me to enjoy,” Mary said, glancing at the counter where the pies sat proudly waiting to be tasted.

“They smell delicious.” Dougray sucked in a breath and let it out slowly. “If pies are payment for any work you need doing around the house, sign me up.”

Camille laughed and covered her mouth as she swallowed her food. “I will bear that in mind.”

“Or if you need anyone to sample your pies,” Klein offered with a wink and a grin. “I’m always willing to lend my taste buds to the cause.”

Dougray chuckled. “Good idea! The Bear Creek Pie Tasting Committee is officially formed.”

If anyone is going to taste Camille’s pies, it’s us, Ezra’s bear said sourly.

Hey, they are only joking, Ezra soothed his bear.

I know, it’s just that everyone is getting to meet Camille, but me, his bear said gruffly.

Tonight, Ezra replied. I am going to tell her tonight.

In that case, our brothers can tease away, his bear said happily.

“I’ll be sure to remember to call you all first when I bake more pies,” Camille responded, laughing along with the lighthearted banter. “And, Ezra, I hope you’re part of this pie-tasting committee, too?”

Ezra felt his bear perk up at her words. “Wouldn’t miss it for the world,” he said, smiling back at her. “And someone has to stop my brothers from eating all the pies.”

“I’d love to share some recipes with you,” Mary said. “Not that you need them, I’m sure.”

“Oh, yeah,” Waylan said. “My mom gave you that old cookbook that belonged to my great-great-grandmother.”

“She did,” Mary said with a fond smile. “She used to walk these mountains, foraging for food. She’d add herbs and spices she grew in her garden or bartered for in town.”

“I’d love to see them,” Camille said. “I’m always searching for inspiration for new flavors. And I love the idea of foraging in the mountains. I was hoping to use local produce in them.”

“So, can we taste your pies now?” Klein asked as he placed his knife and fork down on his plate. “All this talk of pies is making my mouth water.”

“Since you have finished, you can clear the table and grab the bowls,” Mary told her son.

“On it.” Klein was on his feet, moving in his usual efficient manner as he picked up any leftover food and set it on the counter, while dirty dishes went in the sink.
