CHAPTER TWENTY

Harper climbed out of bed and slipped into the bathroom. She had no idea what time it was, nor where her handbag had ended up.

When they had returned home to Daniel's penthouse—they took turns at staying in each other’s rooms—they had been quick to fall into bed.

As Daniel slept quietly, she tiptoed out into the kitchen area, looking for a bottle of water. All this champagne she’d been having was dehydrating her. She was going to make a point of having some alcohol-free days.

Fortunately, today she wasn’t meeting with BookFlix until after lunch, and then tomorrow morning the team was flying home to California. That meant she could spend more time with Daniel if he wasn’t working.

What’s the damn time?

She saw Daniel’s phone on the table and walked up to it. One press of the button and his screen would light up, telling her the time. She just wanted to know how much more time she had to sleep or whether to wake him and enjoy more of his body. Like him, she just couldn’t get enough.

Harper clicked the button on the side of the iPhone and saw it was five in the morning.

He also had a text message.

She tried really hard not to look at it, but one word jumped off the screen and struck her right in the chest.

Then her heart.

It was from Johnathan Dufort, Daniel's father.

Your engagement announcement is tentatively set for the 25 February.

Engagement. What the fuck? Daniel was engaged?

Nausea rose in her throat, and she went running into the bathroom, reaching the toilet just in time. She threw up.

Daniel was engaged?

She’d been sharing a bed, and every other surface in the penthouse, with another woman’s fiancé.

His words came crashing back.

“Harper, if I could, I would love you forever.”

She hadn’t understood them last night, but now it made total sense.

“Are you okay?” Daniel said from behind her, and she felt his hand on her back. Harper wiped her mouth, flushed the toilet, and stood up. She was shaking.

“Are you sick?” he asked, rubbing his face to wake up.

She could barely make him out in the dim light, but she knew he was the most gorgeous man she’d ever seen.

And he’d lied to her.

She had opened her heart—like a fool again—and let him in. Only to be played.

Again.

She began to wheeze as her chest tightened in anger and pain. “I have to go. Where’s my stuff?” She slammed on the lights and they both blinked and squinted, but Harper didn’t wait.

She ran from room to room finding her bra, dress, shoes, bags, phone.

“Harper. Stop,” he demanded. “What the hell is going on?”

She whirled on him. “No, Daniel. You fucking stop. You fucking stop all of this!”

He stared at her, all color draining from his face.

“What is this about?” His voice was dark.

She pointed out into the living room. “As if you don’t know. Go check your phone.”

She dressed while Daniel walked out of the room. He never returned. Harper walked past him as he stood staring at the phone, rubbing his face.
