CHAPTER 20

I

t had been a week since her last conversation with David. Margo’s anger hadn’t subsided, and she was still pissed as she waited for her ex-husband at a coffee shop. What had been love, or at least what she had thought was love, had turned into hate soon after she had gone to prison, and then had dulled over the years. The hate was back now, and it seemed to pulse with a life of its own.

She remembered clearly the day that David had come to visit her in prison. Margo had been shocked when the beefy female guard had called her name, “Harris, you have a visitor.” Margo had been more suspicious than elated at the announcement. It had only been a few months, but she was already used to the idea that David had cut her out. No visits, no phone calls, no letters, and her children seemed to be lost to her regardless of the pages and pages she sent to them weekly.

She sat on her side of the bench and stared at him through the glass, picking up the receiver when he picked up his. “You look good,” he told her, sounding surprised.

Margo had a million questions, but all she really wanted to know was why the children had never been here to see her. “How are the kids?”

David nodded. “They’re as good as can be expected.” He looked around and took it all in. “They are afraid to come see you.” The thought of frightening Abby and Thomas on top of all the other damage that she had already done was another stab in her heart.

Her chin trembled with the tears that she wanted to let fall. “Please tell them it’s fine, nothing will happen here. Maybe if they come once, they’ll see that it’s not so bad. I need to see them, David.” Margo was on the verge of begging him.

“Well, that’s something I need to talk to you about.” He had an agenda. He held up some papers in his right hand, gesturing to the guard. Once the guard set them down in front of Margo, she knew why David was here.

“You’re divorcing me?” she sputtered. So much for “till death do you part.” He couldn’t even wait to see if her appeal was granted.

“It’s the best thing for everyone.” He spoke in a calm voice, but Margo could see his eyes shimmering with excitement, and she understood that this had been what he’d wanted since the day of her arrest.

“The kids need to get on with their lives, get back to normal, Margo. So do I. I would think that you’d want that for us.” He didn’t even hesitate to use her love for them against her.

“Fuck you, David,” she hissed. “And what about me? When do I get back to normal?”

“That’s not my problem.” She had never seen him look at her with such cold eyes.

What had happened to the shy, tender-hearted boy that she had met? The sweet husband who doted on her when she came home from a long day?

There could only be one explanation.
