CHAPTER TWENTY-NINE

Friday, 8:02 p.m.

Detectives Stillman and Roland sat at the table, joined by Detective Roberts from the bomb squad and Detective Chambers from Internal Affairs. Roberts glared at Chambers, rankled by the presence of internal affairs. Everyone stood as the Chief entered. “Please be seated. What’s the latest?”

“Nothing new, sir,” Roland responded. “Forensics is still pending, but we know that all of the parts are generic, and no prints have been found. Cameras in the immediate vicinity were incapacitated by lasers. Surrounding cameras show literally thousands of people, half of them carrying bags that could have contained the bomb. We questioned witnesses, and no one noticed anything unusual. The diversion device in the Stratosphere also gave us nothing. The restaurant uses no cameras, and we interviewed the staff, and no one remembers who could have had access to that table. A small amount of C4 under the silver medal alerted the dog, but it definitely had no detonator.”

“What about the guys in the Dam attack?”

“Nothing, sir. The surviving perpetrator lawyered up and refused a deal.”

The Chief leaned back in his chair. “Detective Chambers, I think it’s time for you to share your investigation with the team.”

Stillman interrupted, “Are you sure that’s a good idea, Chief? There’s risk with that.”

“Right now, there’s a crazy bomber hurting people and making us look like fools. It’s about time to take some risks. Proceed, Chambers.”

“Internal Affairs was notified on Tuesday of the possibility of a bomb squad officer’s involvement in the bombings based on testimony from an inmate.”

Outraged, Roberts stood and pounded the table. “This is fucking bullshit!”

Calmly, the Chief commanded, “Seat yourself, Detective, and listen.”

Roberts sat back down, his unrelenting stare unsoftened, as Chambers explained. “As you all know, the explosives match those confiscated in an arrest months ago. The informant claimed to have had more than the amount we supposedly confiscated and suggested that a cop had to have stolen it and sold it or is now using it. Furthermore, the bombs show sophistication beyond what a YouTube video could teach an amateur. Our bomber clearly has training in explosives.”

Roberts seethed as Chambers continued. “Four arresting officers had the opportunity to take some of the explosives. We have carefully investigated each of them. Armond, Bertrand, and Detective Roberts have clear financial records and are not considered suspects.”

“That’s great fucking news,” Roberts said.

“Sergeant Krug, however, has a significant gambling problem with mounting debts that he has no hope of covering. Were you aware of this, Detective Roberts?”

Roberts calmed down despite all eyes focused on him. “No, I wasn’t until you told me yesterday.”

“Have you noticed any changes in Krug’s behavior?”

“No. He’s always been a loner as the only single guy in our group. He has his own group of friends outside our team, so I don’t know much about his personal life. He shows up and does his job.”

“What about this week? Has he seemed more stressed?”

“We’ve all been stressed. Do you really think he’s the bomber?”

“Do you?”

“I don’t see it. He’s a good kid and a good cop.
