CHAPTER TWENTY-NINE
Friday, 8:02 p.m.
Detectives Stillman and Roland sat at the table, joined by Detective Roberts from the bomb squad and Detective Chambers from Internal Affairs. Roberts glared at Chambers, rankled by the presence of internal affairs. Everyone stood as the Chief entered. âPlease be seated. Whatâs the latest?â
âNothing new, sir,â Roland responded. âForensics is still pending, but we know that all of the parts are generic, and no prints have been found. Cameras in the immediate vicinity were incapacitated by lasers. Surrounding cameras show literally thousands of people, half of them carrying bags that could have contained the bomb. We questioned witnesses, and no one noticed anything unusual. The diversion device in the Stratosphere also gave us nothing. The restaurant uses no cameras, and we interviewed the staff, and no one remembers who could have had access to that table. A small amount of C4 under the silver medal alerted the dog, but it definitely had no detonator.â
âWhat about the guys in the Dam attack?â
âNothing, sir. The surviving perpetrator lawyered up and refused a deal.â
The Chief leaned back in his chair. âDetective Chambers, I think itâs time for you to share your investigation with the team.â
Stillman interrupted, âAre you sure thatâs a good idea, Chief? Thereâs risk with that.â
âRight now, thereâs a crazy bomber hurting people and making us look like fools. Itâs about time to take some risks. Proceed, Chambers.â
âInternal Affairs was notified on Tuesday of the possibility of a bomb squad officerâs involvement in the bombings based on testimony from an inmate.â
Outraged, Roberts stood and pounded the table. âThis is fucking bullshit!â
Calmly, the Chief commanded, âSeat yourself, Detective, and listen.â
Roberts sat back down, his unrelenting stare unsoftened, as Chambers explained. âAs you all know, the explosives match those confiscated in an arrest months ago. The informant claimed to have had more than the amount we supposedly confiscated and suggested that a cop had to have stolen it and sold it or is now using it. Furthermore, the bombs show sophistication beyond what a YouTube video could teach an amateur. Our bomber clearly has training in explosives.â
Roberts seethed as Chambers continued. âFour arresting officers had the opportunity to take some of the explosives. We have carefully investigated each of them. Armond, Bertrand, and Detective Roberts have clear financial records and are not considered suspects.â
âThatâs great fucking news,â Roberts said.
âSergeant Krug, however, has a significant gambling problem with mounting debts that he has no hope of covering. Were you aware of this, Detective Roberts?â
Roberts calmed down despite all eyes focused on him. âNo, I wasnât until you told me yesterday.â
âHave you noticed any changes in Krugâs behavior?â
âNo. Heâs always been a loner as the only single guy in our group. He has his own group of friends outside our team, so I donât know much about his personal life. He shows up and does his job.â
âWhat about this week? Has he seemed more stressed?â
âWeâve all been stressed. Do you really think heâs the bomber?â
âDo you?â
âI donât see it. Heâs a good kid and a good cop.
