hen he got up the next morning Walter found Cam standing outside studying the hillsides near the house.

‘Couldn’t you sleep, lad?’

‘I’ve never needed a lot of sleep and I’m an early morning person.’

‘Me, too. Let’s walk round the nearest fields. I like to check that the sheep are all right, even though I don’t look after them myself these days. It’ll give you a bit of a feel for this sort of land.’

‘I’ve never farmed sheep. They’re not common in our part of the world. If I ask any questions that sound stupid, please bear with me. I’m a quick learner.’

‘Sheep like these do well on the moors here, because they’re hardy. There’s shelter in the sheds in the lower fields during the worst of winter. I’ve never kept a big flock, though, and a neighbour looks after them now.’

Cam listened with obvious interest to explanations, asking intelligent questions, and by hell, the longer Walter spent with him, the more he liked him.

But there was still something that seemed not to fit the type of person he’d been told to expect. He didn’t like any sort of mystery about someone who might inherit the family farm.

Bryn was already tucking into a hearty meal while chatting to the two women, who were waiting to cook breakfast for the others.

After everyone had eaten their fill, Walter said, ‘Why don’t you two lasses take Bryn and Cam for a walk down to the lake? It’s such a sunny morning you’ll see it at its best. And you’ll get a good idea of what our valley is like by walking round some of it.’

Four people stared at him, clearly surprised by this suggestion, then Maude said, ‘If you don’t need us for a while, Cousin Walter, I’d like that. The lake is one of my favourite places. Sometimes the water glints so brightly you feel as if you could pick up a handful of silver.’

Cam turned to his grandfather. ‘You’re sure there’s nothing we can do to help you?’

‘Not till you’re properly recovered from travelling.’

‘You’ll have to leave me out, I’m afraid,’ Elinor said. ‘I need to bake another batch of bread.’

‘Well, as I have a bit of business to sort out in Ollerthwaite, it’d suit me to have the morning free. And I could bring some loaves back, Elinor, and save you the trouble. I’d not like you to miss out on a walk with your friends, especially on such a lovely day as this.’

She stared at him, then at Maude as if asking her friend what to do. ‘Well, I would like to go down to the lake. It’s my favourite place.’

Maude put an arm round her. ‘Mine too. I’d hate to move away from here. I love the valley already.’

They set off soon afterwards, with
