I sat with wide eyes, staring from the balcony as the witch hovered her palms over the beaded chain and began chanting.

The atmosphere darkened, thickening the air until it laid like a heavy blanket on my shoulders. Strands of my hair blew back off my neck, and the candles sparked. The wind picked up just as the image of a man blinked in and out of existence over the altar.

He was young, with long blond hair that shimmered despite the dank sanctuary, and he wore a white shirt and black pants. The gusts of air died down slowly, but he still flickered in and out like a hologram until the witch stepped back and sat down on the first pew.

“William,” the hologram said, his voice smooth and filled with authority. “Nice to see you again.”

William nodded and set the knife down on the altar steps. “You as well, Dorian.”

My heart thundered against my ribs, and Liv glanced down at the floor with such a pained expression, it made me ache for her. Her dad really was working with Dorian, and even though we both suspected it, it was still a shock.

“I was under the impression you would be here in person for our meeting,” William said, shooting a glare at the redhead behind him.

“You’ll learn soon that I do not stay in the same place for long,” Dorian replied. His voice warbled, and then he slowly…changed. His body shrank down and re-stretched like putty, and an elderly woman in a white skirt stood in his place. “Much like I do not stay in the same figure for long.”

“Holy crap,” Liv whispered beside me. “Shapeshifter.”

“Yes. I’ve noticed that. Just like I noticed your leftovers in the kitchen.” William’s tone was disapproving. “Were you going to take care of those bodies? Or are you really that careless about who is exposed to our world?”

Dang. Even though Dorian wasn’t physically here, I didn’t think I’d have the guts to speak to him the way Liv’s dad did.

Dorian tilted his head back with an amused laugh, his hair floating down his back in long locks. “It’s not my priority to keep humans safe. Do with them what you want.”

William looked down at the knife on the altar steps. “I understand. Now, tell me—why did you have Anika bring the knife back? Did you find that Alpha?”

That Alpha?

I re-gripped the balcony wood, threatening to break through the fibers with the fury rising inside me. Liv reached over and touched my hand, mouthing the words calm down, but I couldn’t. Not when they were talking about Aiden.

Dorian shifted again, remolding into a young girl with long black hair and a white dress. “Not yet. I’m saving him for last, for when my army is stronger. He needs to know in the end that he can’t win. For now, I need you to take the knife to Lucille.”

I stifled a gasp, unsure I heard him correctly.

“Did he say Lucille?” I whispered as softly as I could to Liv.
