Chapter Ten
June 16
Later, Sara knew theyâd traveled another six miles. The landscape hadnât changed much. Too many times they had slipped, almost twisted their ankles or worse, had tripped and fallen. Her knees smarted where sheâd stubbed her toe on an unseen rock and sheâd tumbled end over end. The look of terror in Wesâs face told her a lot. Heâd made her sit while he made sure her limbs werenât sprained or broken. Luckily, only bruises here and there and a slight twist to her ankleâthis time. They took a break, hydrating, each of them having only one pint of water left in the two backpacks.
Wes cautioned her about their speed because the slope had become an even sharper decline for as far as they could see. The landscape was changing down below. She didnât see many black rocks poking up in the floor of the forest. Sara kept mute about her ankle, feeling some pull on it, knowing that if she wasnât careful, sheâd really damage it. And then what? Sheâd become a terrible liability to them, slowing them down. Worrying that Colin or Dana Gallagher might come up that road, looking for them, scared her badly, but she kept her worry to herself. Wes helped her up, gave her a tight, hard embrace, kissed her hair and then released her. Just having a little intimacy with him made her heart soar, despite their tense circumstances.
âThe sun is on the tops of the trees,â she said, pointing upward.
Wes glanced. âMore light is better. Itâs so dark in here it makes trying to dodge these damned hidden rocks, even harder. The light is welcome.â He held up his cell phone and then studied it with a frown. âNo bars.â
âBut you had bars when we were on the highway,â she said.
âWe did. But how far does that stretch up the slope of this mountain from it?â
âI hope we donât have to go down to the highway to find out.â
âMe too,â he said, turning it off and pocketing it. âReady?â
Nodding, she gestured for him to set the pace. Tightening the straps on her pack, she fell in behind him as he took a slow jog, weaving in around the trees, but also watching out for those hidden rocks beneath the forest floor. The slope became steeper and she would catch herself sliding on the needles beneath her hiking boots. Luckily, they had good, deep tread and it stopped her from falling on her butt. Sheâd slowed considerably and had her eyes more on the ground than looking too far ahead, not wanting to fall again. Even Wes had checked his speed.
The land grew even steeper than before after they hit their next mile. The trees had opened up far ahead of them and Sara found that strange. Frowning, she saw pieces of hand-hewn four-by-four posts scattered haphazardly about a wide area around them, here and there. Had there been a house here at one time?
Wes suddenly disappeared!
âWES!â she yelled, skidding to a halt.
