The E-Bloc trooper quivered weakly in her arms, and yet the Manananggal held the dying man firmly in arms far stronger than they appeared. Una drank deep, taking care not to lose herself so thoroughly in the sensation of feeding that her hearing allowed someone to slip closer. The man’s life coursed through her, healing the bullet wound she had taken to the shoulder on her way to the shipping container.

She’d left Nibiru unprotected to get here, but the woman had seemed just as adamant that Hayden had someone to watch his back as Una was. At least Nibiru, as she jacked in and out of CodeSource to finish the great task, had a tent full of bootleggers and amateur slingers to guard her perimeter. The engineer should have had full warriors to protect the machine, but their warriors were all elsewhere, in the thick of the chaos and slaughter by the sound of it. She’d heard the awful noises of the Tikbalang being deployed not long ago, and such measures were only used in times of true desperation.

She nudged the body away from Hayden as she let the drained corpse of the trooper collapse in a heap on the container floor. Una had not changed completely into her true and more powerful form, preferring still to exist in something of a half-caste. It was too time consuming, and she hadn’t needed the extra boost of power to catch up to the man she'd just killed. She kept the transformation at bay, however much the sound of gunfire in the distance and the sight of Hayden so vulnerable as he worked might urge her to let go. His face wasn’t anything close to the peacefulness of sleep. It twisted into the same expression of worry she was used to as he thought, brow wrinkling, and his body convulsed from time to time, making it clear he was fighting for his life and theirs.

Una felt them before she heard them. Akiaten were blessed with an array of heightened senses, and perhaps, being Manananggal, with her own unique blend of powers and equally powerful pitfalls, she could perceive more than most. Even Namoc, their greatest hunter whose presence was sorely missed on the battlefield today, could not out stalk Una when her blood was up.

Operatives were on the move nearby, two at least by the subtle sounds of the energy thrumming in their lite power armor, their unfamiliar technological advancements making her stomach turn. She imagined that it was same feeling a human might have when seeing an Akiaten move through the jungle like a lithe, quick animal, or vault over a wall in the city. It was off-putting, uncomfortable.

She peered outside and indeed, they were hard even for her eyes to follow, too quick and too graceful. The ones with too many implants and upgrades smelled like metal. It was that, and the sudden lack of gunfire in all but the most distant of areas on the island that let her know they were too close and coming closer.
