Twenty-One

I saw the green reflection before I saw Flare. Peregrine, carrying Butterfly, flew behind her.

She landed right in front of me. “You moron!”

If I’d been more with it, I would have let her hit me, but my arms blocked her swing on instinct.

“What the hell did you think you were doing?” she yelled.

I was so tired. Adrenaline burnout sucker-punching me again. “I was…” Couldn’t finish the sentence. Needed her to be specific and use small words.

“YOU COULD HAVE DIED!”

I let her hit me this time. Therapeutic for everyone.

“It was a trap.” That’s the point of a trap. Still groggy. I had to wake up and get my mind going again.

“You wasted time rescuing them.” She pointed at the thugs on the roof. They hadn’t moved, but I was pretty sure one was conscious.

“What?” I hadn’t wasted time. They were heavy. Rescuing them had taken effort. “I moved as fast as I could.”

“No! You almost got yourself killed saving this trash.” She kicked the one that was awake. It was a frustration kick, not likely to do damage.

The guy still exhaled in a gust of air.

“If it wasn’t for Dodger, you’d be dead!”

“I know.” And I was still trying to figure out why she was angry. I’d have to be more direct. “What’s the problem?”

“You should have left them!” She was doing a lot of yelling.

“How?” No, that wasn’t right. “I mean, why?” The yelling was waking me up.

“You left Ballista just fine, but you couldn’t leave those wastes,” Peregrine spat.

“Shut up, all of you!” Butterfly’s voice was very human and very raw. “Raven did what we should have done. Now we need to focus on what to do next.” She pointed at the thugs. “But not here.” She looked at the still-settling rubble as police sirens wailed in the distance. Her voice shrank to a whisper. “Not here.”

No, not here. Never again.

Dodger was still too tapped to jump, so Flare gave her a ride. Peregrine gave Butterfly a lift, and I hoofed it.

This adrenaline crash thing was a problem. But nothing like jumping from a five-story building to get your blood pumping. I kept an eye on where Flare flew, about three blocks over on the top of ten-story apartment building.

Typical flyer, she went high. Not thinking about the guy who had to climb that. For once, though, I was glad. A good parkour run helped get the kinks out and started my brain working again.

Another good thing about taking the long route -- I missed out on the opening arguments. Everyone else was already in mid-fight when I caught up. Unfortunately, Butterfly was taking the heat.

“It doesn’t change anything! Ballista is still out there!” Flare yelled at Butterfly.

Butterfly wilted. “I didn’t mean—”

“You said we should give up!” Peregrine sounded disgusted.

“I didn’t say give up.” Butterfly’s voice was almost a whisper, her face pointed at the tar-paper roof.

“Okay Butterfly, you can tag out. Everyone’s favorite punching bag is here.” I faced Flare and Peregrine. “We can resume our regularly scheduled program of stick it to Raven.
