Zoya got to her cabin and her old friend and colleague nearly pushed his way behind her and paced the small open area in the center. Something was really bothering Darko.

“Are you alright?” she asked him.

He turned quickly on her and said, “Of course I’m not alright. That young man is an enigma. His background says nothing about who he truly must be.”

“Which means?”

“Which means he is either FSB or SVR. Logically.”

“He is good,” she admitted. “Do you understand what he just did with me?”

“Of course. We go there to ask him questions, and he finds out more about you without even having to ask directly.”

“That should tell you everything you need to know,” she said.

He scratched his head at both temples. She had seen this before from Darko. He was either professionally frustrated with this case, or sexually frustrated.

“You are jealous of him,” she concluded.

“What? No, of course not.”

“He is handsome and young and obviously quite accomplished.”

“Perhaps you should have sex with him.”

“Is that what you want?”

“Tell me you were not thinking about it?”

She shrugged and said, “Physically he is a perfect specimen. I usually like my men to be Italian or Romanian. They make the best lovers. And this Nikolai could be part of that heritage. But he is too young. I would have to teach him everything. The biggest problem is they finish too soon. For a Russian man, he has not yet been jaded by vodka and the hopelessness of a failed system.”

“You believe our system has failed? That’s the problem?”

“I love Russia,” she said. “But there is always room for improvement. If we are not moving forward, we are either stuck in the mud or slipping backwards.”

“We can’t go back to the Soviet system,” he said with obvious desperation.

“I agree. But perhaps we were better off before that.”

He let out a deep breath and headed toward the door. But he stopped with his hand on the lever and said without turning around, “You are the best I know at sifting through mass data and coming up with a solution. If anyone can understand who has killed these two people on the train, that would be you.”

Colonel Utkin left her alone in her cabin.

She glanced out the window at the changing landscape. Zoya knew that they were heading into a dead zone in this region of southern Siberia between Novosibirsk and Krasnoyarsk. They were moving quickly from steppe to thick forests and wilderness. She sat on her bunk and pulled out her tablet, opening the files on the passengers. It would take her a few hours to sift through this data to try to understand who could be potential suspects. But, deep down she had a feeling this young Russian man—FSB or SVR or GRU—had an excellent point about the motive of these killings. These were not random acts of violence.

As she looked at the names of the passengers, she saw his name and clicked on it. Nicolai Ivanov. Who are you?
