If I tell you that’s what it’s about, that it’s really a play about understanding and respect then it’s still valid today, isn’t it—and it’s your fault for misunderstanding it all. Then it’s still important. It’s the perfect defense. So that’s it. Merchant of Venice is actually a statement about equality but Shakespeare knew his audience wasn’t prepared to accept the idea of equality. So he played to his audience’s prejudices even though he was still trying to challenge them. And when the Venetians abuse Shylock we’re meant to see how ugly and hypocritical they are and how any evil within Shylock is all because of the way he’s been treated by the insensitive Christians. It’s a wonderful argument … absolute bullshit, but a wonderful argument.
