If I tell you thatâs what itâs about, that itâs really a play about understanding and respect then itâs still valid today, isnât itâand itâs your fault for misunderstanding it all. Then itâs still important. Itâs the perfect defense. So thatâs it. Merchant of Venice is actually a statement about equality but Shakespeare knew his audience wasnât prepared to accept the idea of equality. So he played to his audienceâs prejudices even though he was still trying to challenge them. And when the Venetians abuse Shylock weâre meant to see how ugly and hypocritical they are and how any evil within Shylock is all because of the way heâs been treated by the insensitive Christians. Itâs a wonderful argument ⦠absolute bullshit, but a wonderful argument.
