CHAPTER 12: THE DUEL

“The Coldman Tower.” Vekman pointed out when they gathered in the park near sundown. “The top floor is the residence. That's where they must be holding her.”

He pointed to the steel framework of the unfinished skyscraper being built next to it. “Luckily, that tower hasn't been finished yet. We can use the crane on top to smash into the upper floors and attack them in their home.”

“Is that being built by Clichéd Conflict Staging Construction?” Nomi asked.

“No, the Bilden Builders Group. Why?” Vekman asked.

“No reason.”

“Okay,” Vekman continued. “We will split into three teams. Nomi, Edgar and Allen will go for the crane. Jill and April will take the stairs of the Coldman building. This should trip the alarms and the goons will have to come down after you. Your job is to keep them busy. The best way to do that is to run away. You two should have a speed advantage, use it. Alexandria and Willard, you take the elevator to the top. You won't be able to access the top floors. There is a lock on them--”

“Not a problem,” the gray-haired accountant said. “I paid for my schooling by stealing cars. An elevator lock should be a piece of cake.”

“Okay. That--” Vekman looked Willard over. “Billy Smith? From Northwestern?”

“Yes, you seem familiar?”

“Alphonse...They called me The V-Man.” Vekman held out his hand. “We had Corporate Finance together.”

“Oh yeah, you hung out with Buddy Moore.”

“Buddy Moore. That's my older brother,” Alexandria said. “He went to Northwestern.”

“Can we skip the reunion,” Nomi said. “We've got to rescue Heather.”

“Oh yeah. That changes my plans slightly,” Vekman said. “But you still need to remember to retreat. Your job isn't to take on the goons. Just keep them distracted.”

“Okay.”

“I'll monitor everything from my car and let you know how the other teams are progressing,” Vekman said.
