We learned much about human health and healing running our Renew Your Lease on Life program those years in Bali. We worked with men and women, young and old, Asian and Western from all walks of life and a broad spectrum of physiological and psychological conditions. One of the most important things we learned was the truth in the old maxim, “You are what you eat,” and the pivotal role diet and nutrition play in human health. What we saw come out of people’s bowels in a colonic cleanse and what we smelled on their skin and breath while they fasted told us whether the food they ate in their daily diets supported or eroded their health.
One of the dietary lessons we learned was that for most people vegetarian diets, particularly vegan, are not generally beneficial for supporting physical and mental health. Vegans who came to cleanse with us were uniformly unhealthy. They had skin problems, low energy levels, poor immune response, and usually suffered from mood disorders and insomnia. This was caused by chronic deficiency in the high-grade fats and proteins, particularly from animal sources, required by the human body and brain.
Women in particular tended to eliminate all fats from their diets on the mistaken assumption that fats made them fat, and they compensated for the shortfall in nutrition by consuming more grains and sugars, the foods that cause the body to accumulate layers of fat. The human brain is composed of more than 50% fat, and it requires abundant amounts of essential fatty acids in order to produce adequate supplies of neurotransmitters and hormones. Consequently, people who eat low-fat and no-fat diets are vulnerable to depression, anxiety, brain fog, insomnia, and cognitive disorders. Most of our female clients who ate that way refused to increase their consumption of fats from animal sources, especially if they were vegetarians, but those who did experienced swift improvement in both physical and mental health.
The debate about whether the human digestive system is designed by nature to eat food from plant or animal sources continues to rage in health circles, with doctors, nutritionists, swamis, and lifestyle coaches all weighing in with “expert” opinions. Fad diets come and go, each promoted by its own army of celebrities, health writers, and next-door neighbors. The result of all this confusion is plain to see: most people today are far from healthy, many are overweight or grossly obese, and mental and emotional health continue to deteriorate throughout the world. Food fads won’t fix these problems, and neither will religious dogma. People must follow the laws of nature and their own genetic design in order to live long in good health, and they must eat the foods that provide the body with the nutrients it needs.
Forget about food fads and disregard the fatuous advice of self-styled health gurus. Instead, pay attention to what your own body tells you it needs. It does this by sending you signals, and it’s important to learn how to read them.
