The following Friday, each boy was presented with a new dark-blue-and-red team uniform. The name Lakers was emblazoned on the back along with a number. The next afternoon, each boy wore his uniform proudly for the scrimmage against the Benton Braves.

Rusty still couldn’t quite believe that he was suited up with the others. After all, it was less than two weeks ago that he had persuaded his parents to let him play.

But a lot had happened since then. After giving himself his first insulin shot, Rusty found he was eager to continue. He realized how dependent he had been on his parents for that. And even though he still needed them to check the amount of insulin in the syringe, he knew they were proud of him for taking charge.

His playing had improved, too. More shots were going in, and he knew all the plays Alec had taught them as well as anyone else on the team.

Yet even with all these improvements on and off the court, Rusty was pretty sure he wouldn’t be starting in the scrimmage against the Braves. After all, the other boys had been practicing together for a lot longer.

But as long as he got in the game at some point, Rusty knew he would be happy.
