Then, wonder of wonders, Jamaica opened the box of cheese the tall man from the submarine had given them.

Oh, had anything ever smelled so delicious? Jack whimpered longingly. He watched with laser focus as Jamaica sliced pieces of cheese and handed them around. His stomach clenched and he licked his lips in anticipation as Julio took his piece.

Again, just as Jack knew he would, Julio broke the piece of cheese in half. It took all of Jack’s self-control to take the cheese gently from his boy’s fingers.

Chips O’Brien shook his head. “Don’t come crying to me when you’re hungry.”

Jack felt his boy tense. “I always share with Jack,” he said.

Chips shrugged. “Your funeral.”

“What a thing to say!” Stewie protested.

Jack smelled anger pouring from Jamaica. He felt the tension that had been building in the boat all day coming to a dangerous head.

One of his jobs on the ship had been to keep the men happy. Jack grabbed a wet wool blanket that had been drying in the sun. He had no idea what to do with it, but he had to work with what he had. He dragged it over to Chips and dropped it at his feet. He stepped back and wagged his stub of a tail.

Chips frowned. “What’s this dog doing?”

Jamaica laughed. “I think Jack’s trying to tell you not to be such a wet blanket, man.”

Stewie hooted with laughter. “Is that it, Jack old boy?”

Jack sneezed twice. Jack wasn’t sure why, but everyone enjoyed it when he sneezed.

The castaways laughed and laughed. Even O’Brien managed a half smile.

Jack felt the tension melt away. He curled up again beneath his boy’s legs and sighed. He had done his job. He was a good dog.
