Chapter 11

The man beside Terra Hathaway beamed a smile full of sparkling white teeth. Around his neck, he wore a gold chain as thick as my tail that matched the signet ring on his middle finger. His diamond stud earrings really caught my attention, though. They were the size of large blueberries. I bet Great-Uncle Felix could sell them for $50,000 a piece at his jewelry store in Del Mar. The guy’s arm snared Terra’s waist. “Hello, Roger.” The man held out his free hand. His deep voice spoke without a trace of accent. “Nice to you see you again.”

“You two know each other?” Terra asked, sounding surprised.

Roger’s face froze. “Yes.” He spoke in a stilted voice. “We know each other.”

“How?” Rain asked.

“Won’t you shake Victor’s hand?” Terra pouted.

“No,” said Roger. “I won’t.”

“Dad?” Summer asked. She clutched me tighter, and I felt her heart pound against me.

“How exactly do you know each other?” Rain stood up straight and surveyed the scene.

“From work,” said Roger.

“Roger cleans his DEA-issued sedan at one of my car washes.” Victor withdrew his hand and shoved it in his pocket.

“Victor owns over a hundred car washes,” Terra gushed. “From LA all the way down to Baja.”

The Baja cartel, I barked. I wiggled in Summer’s arms, anxious to investigate. The diesel odor and scent of human ashes was so powerful, I was surprised the humans couldn’t smell it. I wondered what else I would detect if I got closer to Victor and sniffed his shoes.

Terra sneered at me. “I see you still have your true love.” She rolled her eyes at Victor. “When Snowball got a $120 haircut, Roger never complained, but when I came back from the salon with a balayage he acted like I’d committed murder.”

“Nobody comes back from the salon drunk.” Roger scowled. “I’ve never heard of a dye job that came with three martinis.”

“Dad,” Summer cautioned. “Be nice. Mom does AA now.”

“Do you like dogs, Victor?” Rain asked, changing the subject.

“Sure do.” Victor reached out and petted the top of my head. I flinched when his fingers scratched me behind the ears. “I have a soft spot for rat dogs. My mom rescues mutts in Bario Logan.”

“How awesome,” said Rain.

“Yup,” said Victor. “She runs her own rescue organization and everything.”

“I bet that could make an interesting story for the school newspaper.” Rain tapped her chin, morphing into full reporter mode. “Maybe we could combine the article with a dog food drive.”

“Mama would love that.” Victor’s low voice had a resonance that reminded me of a radio announcer. “Let’s talk over dinner.”

Roger rolled back his shoulders and sniffed. “Absolutely not. You’re not taking my girls anywhere.”

“Daddy,” said Summer in a cautioning tone.

“You don’t get to decide.” Terra wagged her finger at Roger. “It’s in the custody agreement.”

“That’s right.” Victor cracked his knuckles. “A deal is a deal.”

“We’ll only be gone a couple hours.” Summer shoved me into her father’s arms. “Here. Hold Snowball.”

I felt Roger tremble as he watched the girls walk out of the house with Terra and Victor.
