Whizzing through the air, White is in the midst of a gold-medal run in the half-pipe at the 2009 LG Snowboard FIS World Cup.

He was a winner, and a champion, but there was one thing left that Shaun White wanted to accomplish. He wanted to win an Olympic gold medal.

Chapter 5

Going for Gold!

There is probably no greater honor in all of sports than to win the Olympic gold medal. It means simply that you are the best in the entire world, as any country can compete in the Olympics.

Shaun White was already a snowboarding, skateboarding superstar by the time he arrived in Torino, Italy, for the 2006 Winter Olympics. Snowboarding had been added as an Olympic sport in 1998.

I had the privilege of covering the 2006 Winter Olympics for my newspaper and I remember exactly the first time I saw Shaun White and the rest of the 2006 American snowboard team:

People like White, Hannah Teter, Lindsey Jacobellis, and Seth Wescott walked into the interview room like rock stars. Everyone wanted to be near them, everyone wanted to interview them. Reporters asked White if he was nervous. He laughed and asked if anyone had the phone number for one of the pretty figure skaters competing!
