NINETEEN
HEADWATERS
Nuke climbed over the boulder trying to follow the river up the mountain to see if he could locate its source. This was now his third day on this mountain; he was growing very tired of leaves and berries. While they did seem to give him a good deal of energy, he wanted to find some type of fishâhopefully. The effort was at least worth a try as his body was craving some type of protein. He couldnât imagine killing any of the creatures he had seen here. But fishâhe could definitely see eating fish.
He also realized he couldnât stay here indefinitely. Someone should have missed him by now. If no one showed up before tomorrow, he would have to consider whether he should make the trek to the two spires he had seen on the distant mountain. He couldnât even guess the number of kilometers he would have to travel to get there. He thought to himself: a giant eagle. Yes, that was what he needed. He could be there in no time if that was his mode of travel. He chuckled. Not much chance of that.
Occasionally he would get a glimpse of one of the rabbit-like creatures, but they would dart away before he could get a good look at them. They seemed curious of him but skittish at the same time. He wondered if he could win one over. He would love to pet one. Their fur looked amazingly soft.
He trudged over rocks and boulders while following the river up the mountain. Looking up, the sun indicated the day was almost half spent already. As he climbed over the next large boulder, he quickly ducked. He slowly peeked over the top. This area seemed to be the headwaters of the stream. He could see a small geyser of water in the middle of a large pool of water . . .
But what had truly startled him was a rhicerotide drinking on the far side of the pool, looking almost exactly like the one he had encountered on Sharab, yet probably not quite as large. As he peered over the boulder, he saw another come up with a baby. This second one looked more grayish in color and had a slight reddish hue. The baby seemed more purple in color with a reddish hue around its neck and legs. He smiled. This was his first time seeing an entire rhicerotide family. He was surprised to see them this high on the mountain.
He slowly climbed over the boulder and quietly walked to the waterâs edge. Thirsty from his all-morning climb, yet not wanting to spook the rhicerotide family, he slowly knelt and brought some of the water up to his mouth by using his hands. He sat on one of the large rocks next to the pool of water.
The rhicerotide family appeared to not notice him for the longest time. When the baby finally looked up, the creature paused and did a muffled roar. Its mother licked its head, apparently trying to keep her baby calm.
