“So picture this up one story,” Mike said. “You’re standing in the entrance from the street-side deck. In front and to the left of you is the great room, with the kitchen to the center and right.” He pointed. “The hall will lead to the spare bedroom and in the front, you’ll have your office.”

She closed her eyes. She could almost see it in her mind. Big windows. Sunlight filling the house with a warm glow. “What about the third story?”

“That entire space is your master bedroom and bath, with a large deck overlooking the view to the west so you’ll have your sunsets.”

“Mike, it’s going to be the best house on the street.”

“Thanks. I felt bad when you lost everything in the fire. We’ll have you ready to move in by mid-May.”

“Why so long?” She had hoped for April.

Tric gave the palm of her hand a comforting caress and it calmed her.

“We have to wait for cabinetry and other fixtures, but don’t worry. If supplies are ahead of schedule, we will be too. I promise we’ll get you in as fast as we can so your uncle can start renting out the Shamrock again.”

“I know you will, Mike. Thanks for your help.”

Tric pulled his hand away and walked to the other side of the space. “How much square footage will you have when it’s done?”

Mike rolled back on his heels. “With the decks, garage, and storage, just over three thousand, and lots of windows and sliding doors.”

“A perfect island house.”

A smile filled his face. “I can picture you here.”

“You’ll have to come visit me.” But would he? That was something to think about another day.

“I might have to.” He reached for her hand again like it was the most natural thing to do.

“Alright, Mike, we’ll get out of your hair and if something comes up, let me know.”

“Actually, if you have time in the next day or so, would you head over to the mainland and stop at the shop to approve the kitchen and bath cabinets and interior doors? I’d like to have Marge get them on order.”

She looked at Tric. “Want to go with me?”

He said, “I’ve got time.”

“We can go this afternoon and get it done.” She also thought the sooner, the better. “Anything else I should pick out?”

“There’s always flooring and bathroom tiles. I can give Marge a heads-up, and she can pull a few things for you to look at.”

“Tell her we’ll be there in less than a half hour. We have plenty of time before our dinner reservation.”

“Will do. Have fun.” Mike took their hard hats and walked away.

“We’re off to the mainland.” She jingled the keys in her hand. “I can drop you at the house if you’d rather hang out here. It’ll be kind of boring for you.”

“You can tell me more about your life. I know there must be more than just work and walking on the beach and friends who take off for a couple of months.” He folded himself into the car.
