âSo picture this up one story,â Mike said. âYouâre standing in the entrance from the street-side deck. In front and to the left of you is the great room, with the kitchen to the center and right.â He pointed. âThe hall will lead to the spare bedroom and in the front, youâll have your office.â
She closed her eyes. She could almost see it in her mind. Big windows. Sunlight filling the house with a warm glow. âWhat about the third story?â
âThat entire space is your master bedroom and bath, with a large deck overlooking the view to the west so youâll have your sunsets.â
âMike, itâs going to be the best house on the street.â
âThanks. I felt bad when you lost everything in the fire. Weâll have you ready to move in by mid-May.â
âWhy so long?â She had hoped for April.
Tric gave the palm of her hand a comforting caress and it calmed her.
âWe have to wait for cabinetry and other fixtures, but donât worry. If supplies are ahead of schedule, we will be too. I promise weâll get you in as fast as we can so your uncle can start renting out the Shamrock again.â
âI know you will, Mike. Thanks for your help.â
Tric pulled his hand away and walked to the other side of the space. âHow much square footage will you have when itâs done?â
Mike rolled back on his heels. âWith the decks, garage, and storage, just over three thousand, and lots of windows and sliding doors.â
âA perfect island house.â
A smile filled his face. âI can picture you here.â
âYouâll have to come visit me.â But would he? That was something to think about another day.
âI might have to.â He reached for her hand again like it was the most natural thing to do.
âAlright, Mike, weâll get out of your hair and if something comes up, let me know.â
âActually, if you have time in the next day or so, would you head over to the mainland and stop at the shop to approve the kitchen and bath cabinets and interior doors? Iâd like to have Marge get them on order.â
She looked at Tric. âWant to go with me?â
He said, âIâve got time.â
âWe can go this afternoon and get it done.â She also thought the sooner, the better. âAnything else I should pick out?â
âThereâs always flooring and bathroom tiles. I can give Marge a heads-up, and she can pull a few things for you to look at.â
âTell her weâll be there in less than a half hour. We have plenty of time before our dinner reservation.â
âWill do. Have fun.â Mike took their hard hats and walked away.
âWeâre off to the mainland.â She jingled the keys in her hand. âI can drop you at the house if youâd rather hang out here. Itâll be kind of boring for you.â
âYou can tell me more about your life. I know there must be more than just work and walking on the beach and friends who take off for a couple of months.â He folded himself into the car.
