âYouâre quiet.â I finally break the silence between me and Parker as I drive down the dark winding road which is the heart of Woodville. âYou havenât said a word since we left mine.â I take my eyes off the road for a second and look at my best friend, but she refuses to meet my gaze.
âWhat was all that about?â
âWhat?â I know what sheâs referring too but I pretend to play dumb anyways, hoping to buy myself more time so I can come up with some epic bullshit excuse. âThe showdown or that douche of a boyfriend?â
âIâm talking about all the drama with Carter?â She finally turns her face to mine and I can see her eyes glistening with unshed tears. Shit. I knew opening my mouth would be a bad fucking idea, but what could I do? Dean was goading me, and he was pushing me to my breaking point. Thereâs only so much one person can take, and I snapped. Iâm human after all, and if he actually stopped to think about what I said then he would see that itâs not just me to blame. It takes two to dance, not one. But Dean will never ever see any bad in Carter. Heâs so far up Carterâs ass that Iâm surprised he hasnât developed third degree burns from the sun that he so foolishly thinks shines out of it. âIs it true?â Her voice is small, but I donât miss the serious tone.
âIs what true?â
âDid you sleep with him?â
I let out a long sigh and I know Parker already knows my answer, but that doesnât make this any easier when it comes to confessing my sins out loud. âYes.â I swallow back on the bile which threatens to creep up and spill into my mouth.
âAre you being serious?â Her eyes grow wide and sheâs looking at me like she no longer recognizes me.
âTrust me, P, this isnât something that Iâm particularly proud of.â I tell her truthfully and itâs by far my proudest moment. âI wanted to tell you as soon as it happened.â
âSo, why didnât you?â I know sheâs hurt, and I donât blame her. Parker was totally honest with me when it came to Dean even though she knew that I wouldnât be happy about it. She still told me because thatâs what best friends do. They tell each other everything. They confide in each other no matter what. Even if the other person is going to be majorly pissed.
âI wanted to, but I just couldnât do it. I promise, I tried to tell you, but you were so happy about Deanâ¦â I feel terrible for lying to her but itâs the first thing that comes to mind. Blame Dean for everything. Heâs a big boy, and Iâm sure he can take it.
âPlease donât insult my intelligence. Dean isnât to blame for this.â She turns her head to look out of the window again and I would love to know whatâs going through her head right now.
