“You’re quiet.” I finally break the silence between me and Parker as I drive down the dark winding road which is the heart of Woodville. “You haven’t said a word since we left mine.” I take my eyes off the road for a second and look at my best friend, but she refuses to meet my gaze.

“What was all that about?”

“What?” I know what she’s referring too but I pretend to play dumb anyways, hoping to buy myself more time so I can come up with some epic bullshit excuse. “The showdown or that douche of a boyfriend?”

“I’m talking about all the drama with Carter?” She finally turns her face to mine and I can see her eyes glistening with unshed tears. Shit. I knew opening my mouth would be a bad fucking idea, but what could I do? Dean was goading me, and he was pushing me to my breaking point. There’s only so much one person can take, and I snapped. I’m human after all, and if he actually stopped to think about what I said then he would see that it’s not just me to blame. It takes two to dance, not one. But Dean will never ever see any bad in Carter. He’s so far up Carter’s ass that I’m surprised he hasn’t developed third degree burns from the sun that he so foolishly thinks shines out of it. “Is it true?” Her voice is small, but I don’t miss the serious tone.

“Is what true?”

“Did you sleep with him?”

I let out a long sigh and I know Parker already knows my answer, but that doesn’t make this any easier when it comes to confessing my sins out loud. “Yes.” I swallow back on the bile which threatens to creep up and spill into my mouth.

“Are you being serious?” Her eyes grow wide and she’s looking at me like she no longer recognizes me.

“Trust me, P, this isn’t something that I’m particularly proud of.” I tell her truthfully and it’s by far my proudest moment. “I wanted to tell you as soon as it happened.”

“So, why didn’t you?” I know she’s hurt, and I don’t blame her. Parker was totally honest with me when it came to Dean even though she knew that I wouldn’t be happy about it. She still told me because that’s what best friends do. They tell each other everything. They confide in each other no matter what. Even if the other person is going to be majorly pissed.

“I wanted to, but I just couldn’t do it. I promise, I tried to tell you, but you were so happy about Dean…” I feel terrible for lying to her but it’s the first thing that comes to mind. Blame Dean for everything. He‘s a big boy, and I’m sure he can take it.

“Please don’t insult my intelligence. Dean isn’t to blame for this.” She turns her head to look out of the window again and I would love to know what’s going through her head right now.
