CHAPTER TWELVE

The worst part was that she had to change her hair color again.

That agent, the woman who had shot at her, had seen her. She wasn’t likely to miss a detail like a new haircut and hair color. So this look was burned.

That was a bummer, because Alex rather liked it. She didn’t often have a chance to look fashionable or distinguished, while still remaining low profile. Usually she had to blend in, be bland and undistinguished. It had been this way for two years.

She’d had high hopes for keeping this look for a while.

But one of the advantages of it was that she could easily have the color changed.

She found a stylist conveniently located on the resort property. Their rates were alarmingly high, but the convenience of not having to go out in public—where the risk of being spotted went up—made them the perfect choice.

She had the stylist aim for something dark and rich, with hints of her original color so she wouldn’t have to return for touch-ups. She also added extensions, giving her hair more length and body.

The result was that she looked like an entirely different person at a glance. The FBI was trained to recognize facial features, even beyond things like glasses and hairstyles, so she wouldn’t necessarily pass close scrutiny. But the obvious markers were obliterated. It would be tougher to pick her out on video surveillance, or at a distance.

This job was turning out to be a lot more physically active than most others, so it was time to consider her wardrobe. She frequently had to change her look to blend in with various environments, but from this point forward she’d make sure she had something under her clothes that would let her not only quick-change, but would flow with her for quick movements.

She visited a high-end fitness store that was a quick Uber ride from Disney. It was oriented toward extreme sports, and she was able to pick up not only a tough and durable compression body suit but also some low-profile climbing shoes and gloves. She could keep these in a bag or pocket, to access them quickly.

She also purchased a few odds and ends for climbing, which could serve double duty as needed.

She wasn’t prone to carrying a lot of gear with her when she was on a job, but the close calls had made it a necessity. She could still rely on what her grandfather had called “resource thinking,” always keeping an inventory of what was around her, mentally cataloging what could be useful. She was simply stacking the deck a little.

It was worth the inconvenience.

Her final purchase was equal parts resource and nostalgia, however.

In a store window just down the block from the fitness store, she spotted a display of Swiss Army knives. She’d long since lost the one her grandfather had left her, which was something she regretted keenly.

Letting it go had been necessary, though, and she would do it again, no question. But seeing the array of little red knives on a slowly rotating window display brought her right back to her childhood.
