Rebecca didnât even get a chance to walk inside the building at the Virginia State Police office in Norfolk, Virginia. As soon as she pulled into the parking lot, Rhonda flagged her down, stretching an arm above the parked rows of SUVs.
Taking the loop around, Rebecca pulled up to the sidewalk, and Rhonda motioned for her to pop the rear lift gate.
Boxes of what she assumed were the trafficking informational pamphlets were stacked beside Rhonda. With the efficiency of a seasoned warehouse worker, the special agent hoisted all four boxes into the SUV. She shut the hatch and climbed in, pulling the strap of a messenger bag over her head.
âOkay, youâre going to want to head that way to get onto Newton Road.â She pointed over her shoulder as she got settled in the vehicle, tucking her bag between her feet.
Rebecca remembered their conversation from the day before. With a wry smile, she started driving again. âIâm taking you to lunch right this second, arenât I?â
âYou sure are!â Rhonda pulled her seat belt on with a grin. âThereâs a great taqueria up that way. And the booths are nice and tall, so theyâll lend us some privacy as we work.â
Staying focused on the road and traffic, Rebecca peeked at her out of the corner of her eye. âWhy do I have the feeling you only asked me up here to buy you lunch?â
âBecause youâre a wonderfully suspicious person.â Rhonda pointed for her to turn left as they got to the end of the first street. âHowever, why do one thing at a time when you can do three?â
âThree?â Rebecca arched an eyebrow.
âI get to eat.â She held up one finger to count off her mental list. âWe can go over the pictures. And I get to hang out with you on a Sunday instead of sitting in a completely empty building listening to the AC click over.â
That made Rebecca laugh. âI thought you liked working when it was quiet.â
âI do. But Iâve been working a lot of overtime recently, and not being around people is starting to get to me.â
The irony of her going to work to have some peace and quiet while Rhonda was desperate for human interaction was not lost on Rebecca. âSo explain to me what you were doing running surveillance on Christoph Blake and Serenity McCreedy.â
Rhonda shook her head. âSerenity was secondary. We were focused on Christoph.â She shifted in her seat so she could peer at Rebecca. âYou know heâs part of the Yacht Club, right?â
âOf course.â
âWell, heâs not very high up. As far as we can tell, heâs nothing more than a glorified errand boy. Which means heâs often a driver too.â Rhonda pointed to a driveway for a parking lot. âTurn right here.â
Rebecca nodded as she followed the directions and found a place to park. âHe was one of the people that picked up the underage girls and took them out to the boats.â It was a guess, but it made sense.
âYou nailed it.
