Iblinked and he was gone.

The students flowed into my classroom, backpacks slung over their shoulders like this was just a normal day for them.

My eyes darted to the whiteboard, covered in splatters of black ink.

Grayson’s blood.

Dripping.

I felt numb.

Was this a symptom of shock?

Yes, I surely must be in shock.

I looked at my hands—covered in blurry black spiderwebs of ink.

The bell rung.

Some were still on their phones, but a few were looking up at me attentively.

I thought of Grayson cutting himself, flinging his darkness everywhere.

And the way he smiled…

I’d never encountered anything else in my life that could fit in that word.

“Miss Sinclair? Are you okay?” Emma asked.

I blinked a few times and tried to stitch reality back together. But there was black blood smeared all over Emma’s desk. She propped her elbow and rested her head in her hand, and got some of the blackness on her cheek—

“I… I need some air.” I ran my hand through my hair—sticky with Grayson’s blood. “I’ll be back in a few moments.”
