Baker fidgeted. “They ought to be back by now,” he said. Lynwood and Luka nodded in agreement. They all looked anxiously at the blackness closing around them. Baker sniffed. “Luka, why don’t you go out there and look around?”

Luka did not like that idea, but he nodded subserviently. He had decided that this would be his last involvement with the Americans. Determined to just get it over with, with as little controversy as possible, he stood, knowing that he would not find anything. Joe and Hawk were probably dead, in his estimation.

He walked along the bank of the swamp, going far enough that Baker could no longer hear his footsteps. Then he sat down. He would wait a decent interval before going back. He heard a noise in the jungle behind the swamp. It was an odd noise, like something sliding in the damp earth. He looked at the heavy verdure, dappled with unnerving, watery shadows, glimmering from the dull marsh surface. He stood slowly.

“Sergeant Hawk?” he called with relief. “We worry for you.” The dark leaves shook, as if under their own mystical power. The sound of labored breathing came from behind them. Two searing red lights floated in the air toward Luka. “You scare me. Scary place.” The red lights were narrow slits. Luka leaned forward. He realized that they were eyes. Two huge feet on hairy legs and haunches stepped from the concealment. Luka had come face-to-face with Gohoron. He saw a bare human chest on a two-legged animal.

Luka backed into the water out of sheer revulsion. He raised his rifle with nearly paralyzed hands. The beast swayed from side to side, closing in on him slowly. Luka was hypnotized by the sight of the fiery eyes, the horns, and the great furry head. Gohoron groaned, as if bored by the expected terror. He did not show his little teeth.

“Baker,” Luka gasped. It was a soft, futile whine. Gohoron raised his long arm. There was a coughing sound and Luka dropped dead, in the heart of the pantung region.

He should have known better than to be there, for he had religion.
