Forms

When creating forms, the aim is to achieve a balance between gaining as much information from your site visitor as possible without making them feel as though they have to fill in too many fields. Asking for too much information will simply turn people away, so the key is to be as succinct as you can.

If you need to display supplementary information, you could do it using small pieces of text that appear when certain form elements are selected, or use notes to inform users of an error in their form entries. In Figure 4.23, the sign-up form for Ning, we can see an example of errors being indicated with highlighting on the form fields, along with a note at the top.
