Risky Sexual Behaviours

Vijayasarathi Ramanathan

Introduction

People engage in diverse sexual activities to experience and express their sexuality [1]. Risky sexual behaviour (RSB) is any activity that places an individual(s) at risk of, potential or actual, undesirable outcomes (e.g. contracting sexually transmitted infections [STIs], human immunodeficiency virus [HIV] or unwanted pregnancy). RSB substantially contributes to disease burden [2]. RSBs are reported based on the specific sex act (e.g. condomless penovaginal/penoanal intercourse, unprotected oral–anogenital contact). RSB is also used to describe people who are considered ‘at risk/high risk’ based on their sexual behaviours (e.g. unprotected sex with multiple partners, sexual debut at a young age [3] or sex under the influence of alcohol/substance) [4]; people engaged in (unregulated) commercial sex work [5]; sex with a partner(s) who injects or has ever injected drugs; or sex with a high‐risk partner [6].
