I got married when I was 12 years old and he was approximately 22 to 24, I don’t know exactly but 22 or 24. He was the young man, I was the young bride. My grandmother forced me to marry in early childhood, there is a belief that if a daughter gets married before her first menstruation they would be religious [i.e., the belief is that marrying off one’s daughter before puberty guarantees eternal blessings to the parents]. She forced me to marry early. My mother also married early because her mother forced her, too. Right after taking the sixth grade examinations I got married and … then I just left my education. My family was conscious about the importance of education, they allowed me to go to school. But now I was married, and because of my husband’s ignorance and not knowing how important education is, I left my education behind for a few years. When my children were three and five years old they went to school and I started school again too.

(A Brahmin woman in her late 50s)
